January is.... National Braille Literacy Month
This month we recognize the legally blind and visually impaired for National Braille Literacy Month. The observance raises awareness of the importance of Braille to the blind and visually impaired community. As audio technology progresses, the use of Braille dwindles. However, its significance remains, especially in the workplace and the classroom. The month offers the opportunity to learn about and appreciate Braille. To read some fun facts about Braille, visit HERE. Another great resource is The Braille Institute, which provides free services and support for people of all ages experiencing vision loss. Become a parent leader by attending this virtual four-part advocacy training beginning in January 2024. Must be a parents with children under the age of 8 who have received Early Start services. There will be four modules to learn from, and parents completing the training will receive a parent-child care package with books, toys, and leadership tools.

Join other parents in-person at our Chatsworth, Santa Clarita, or Antelope Valley offices for this fun Coffee & Conversation where we will discuss ways to have a Healthy Heart! Let's talk about how we take care of our heart health, and we will be creating a fun Valentines heart activity together. You will also have the opportunity to take a craft home to make with your loved ones. Snacks and refreshments will be served.
We will be meeting from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the FFRC offices at NLACRC offices in Chatsworth, Santa Clarita, and Antelope Valley.

Individuals with dyslexia qualify for free, life-long service from The Braille and Talking Book Library in Sacramento and its Southern California counterpart Braille Institute. With access to over 150,000 audiobooks for all ages, they can provide an entry point to reading when traditional print is a barrier. Their content is available on flash memory cartridge which plays on accessible equipment that they provide, or can be download from their mobile app.
Educators can also qualify for their own library service: teachers can sign up for an institutional account and request that books be sent directly to their classroom for eligible students. The library has many materials that are compatible with an English Language Arts Curriculum, and students can participate in Sustained Silent Reading Time in the classroom using a digital book player and headphones.
To begin service, you can apply on the website ( Apply here ). Applicants fill this out and have it signed by a certifying authority such as a doctor, social worker, certified reading specialist, therapist, school psychologist, and more, including classroom teachers, superintendents, and librarians. Every year the Littlerock Town Council organizes the Littlerock Christmas Parade, and this year FFRC was so happy to be included in this wonderful event. The town's Christmas Tree Lighting followed the parade.

Help us welcome our newest Family Support Provider, Tim Carter. Tim is the proud dad of twin 18-year-old sons who are both Regional center consumers. Tim has previously worked for 6 years in Northern California doing support and advocacy for families of children with disabilities, and he speaks Spanish! He also used to work in TV production and has won 12 Emmy Awards!
Fun fact about Tim: he likes to dance and has led several flash mob routines! Stop by our Chatsworth office and say hello! Welcome Tim!

Kristie Lacy has joined our CSUN office as a Community Navigator and we are so happy to have her! She also has twins who are 7, and Kristie loves to travel and has had the privilege of living in many countries. Kristie loves research, learning and sharing information with others. When she isn't working with families, she and her husband enjoy Comic Con, Dungeons and Dragons and taking their family to Disneyland. Welcome Kristie!
