Preparing Students for Life Beyond School

Join CSUN Professor Samantha Toews, PhD, for a two-part workshop series focused on helping families and educators support students with disabilities as they transition from the classroom to the community.

The first session will explore how families and teachers can

assist students during the K–12 years as they prepare for post-school life.

The second session will focus on transition planning strategies that

can be helpful during high school and the post-high-school period.

IEP Essentials:

Empowering & Preparing Parents for their child's IEP

January is Braille Literacy Month, a time to recognize the importance of braille as a vital tool for literacy, independence, and equal access for individuals who are blind or have low vision. Braille supports education, employment, and daily life, empowering people to read, write, and engage fully in their communities.

January is… National Birth Defects Awareness Month

January is National Birth Defects Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about birth defects, promote healthy pregnancies, and support individuals and families affected by these conditions. Birth defects are structural changes present at birth that can affect nearly any part of the body, and while not all birth defects can be prevented, understanding risk factors, early care, and resources can help improve health outcomes. Join us in learning more about how communities can support healthy beginnings and lifelong inclusion for everyone.

Enero es el Mes Nacional de Concientización sobre los Defectos de Nacimiento, un momento para crear conciencia sobre los defectos de nacimiento, promover embarazos saludables y apoyar a las personas y familias afectadas por estas condiciones. Los defectos de nacimiento son cambios estructurales presentes al nacer que pueden afectar casi cualquier parte del cuerpo, y aunque no todos pueden prevenirse, comprender los factores de riesgo, la atención temprana y los recursos disponibles puede ayudar a mejorar los resultados de salud.

Welcome Nica Canton!

We are happy to welcome Nica Canton as the Antelope Valley Coordinator at FFRC. Nica is a proud mom to a 4.5-year-old boy and has personally benefited from FFRC through her son’s involvement with the Regional Center. She has a degree in Social Work and plans to start her master’s next fall, while also pursuing an associate’s in Accounting Technology at College of the Canyons. Nica enjoys helping people, volunteering, and staying involved in the Antelope Valley community. Welcome Nica!

Fatima led a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration with her Cultivar y Crecer support group! Families came together in a warm and welcoming space to connect, share experiences, and support one another. It was a meaningful opportunity to reflect, strengthen bonds, and grow as a community.

The FFRC Filipino Support Group celebrated the holidays with a festive gathering! Families enjoyed food, fun, and community connection. We were honored to have Senator Caroline Menjivar join the celebration and share in the holiday cheer.

Lowman CTC Life After

High School Fair

FFRC participated in the Lowman CTC Life After High School Fair, co-sponsored by NLACRC. Tim attended the event and connected with parents and community vendors to share information about FFRC services. It was a valuable opportunity to support families as they plan for life after high school and to collaborate with partners serving transition-aged youth.

Inclusive Holiday Party of Joy

December 6, 7, and 13

Family Focus Resource Center hosted its Inclusive Holiday Party of Joy across the Santa Clarita Valley, Antelope Valley, and San Fernando Valley, bringing families together for joyful and meaningful celebrations. Attendees enjoyed visits from Santa, interactive music with the CSUN Music Therapy Wellness Clinic where children played instruments and sang along, time with therapy dogs, fun activities with Kidz Kingdom, festive raffles, bailes folclóricas, balloon creations from talented balloon artists, and special moments captured in photos.

Thank you to Christ Lutheran Church, Ohana Center, and Easterseals for their wonderful hospitality, and to everyone who joined us and helped make these events such memorable and inclusive celebrations for our community.
