The Rabbi has returned ...

I AM BACK and want to connect with you. Please let me know if you or someone you know has experienced a significant event during the past few months so I can reach out. This includes but is not limited to: deaths, illnesses, births, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, promotions, and awards. I look forward to seeing you all very soon.

B'Shalom,

Rabbi Chaya Bender
President's letter ...
Welcome Back Rabbi Bender!
What a wonderful week it has been! Seeing Rabbi’s smiling face this week when she returned from maternity leave made me very happy. Although we survived and thrived during her absence, (mainly because of the detailed plans she had made), we are looking forward to new classes, programs, and her leadership as we begin the next chapter in the life of Bnai Israel. As you might recall, Rabbi Bender joined us after the pandemic began. This is the first time she will be able to meet with members and lead us in worship mask-free. What a strange time this has been.

Also this week, Onegs & Kiddish lunches are back! It’s about time to have a nosh with everyone you’ve seen only virtually for the last 15 months.

In honor of Rabbi Benders return, there will be a special Oneg after Friday's service. Please join us in the Sanctuary at 6:00pm and in the Social Hall afterwards. You will notice a few differ-ences: Instead of serving yourself, we will be serving you. Just point out what you’d like to have. It might take a bit longer and we might ask you to help, but we are taking this precaution to keep Bnai Israel a safe place to worship and socialize.

The Port City Music Festival graced us with an amazing concert on Tuesday. These talented musicians have provided free concerts at various venues in Wilmington each June for the last 13 years. Forced to cancel their 2020 festival due to the pandemic, we were happy to welcome them back and enjoyed an extraordinary performance in our beautiful sanctuary.
Yes, indeed, it’s been a wonderful week.

Shabbat Shalom,
Michelle

PRIDE Program on Thursday, June 10th at 7:00pm with Keshet on ZOOM

In honor of June being LGBTQ Pride Month, we will strive to help understand the LGBTQ+ community and work to support LGBTQ equality, acceptance and belonging.

Ever wonder what all the acronyms mean when it comes to LGBTQ+ terminology? This program is designed to help familiarize you with the basics of building LGBTQ equality and inclusion. Topics covered will include terminology, common misperceptions, stereotypes, and understanding the importance of creating explicitly LGBTQ
affirming culture within our Jewish Community.

The program will be led by Randi Reed, of Keshet. This will be a "Safe Space" to ask any questions you may have. Please feel free to include your questions when you register for the program. To attend the program, please register here.

This program is being sponsored by the Temple of Israel Tikkun Olam Committee and B'nai Israel.

Neighbors in Conversation with St. Jude's Metropolitan Community Church has been postponed until August due to a date conflict with the Pride Celebration. Details will be announced later.

Wednesday, July 21,  from 7:00 - 8:00 pm for an exciting Sisterhood-sponsored virtual tour of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. We will visit the home of the Epstein family in the 1950s where Kalman and Rivka Epstein lived as refugees after surviving the Holocaust. More information to follow.
Registration Deadline is June 30, 2021
IN OUR OWN COMMUNITY ...
Human trafficking is a significant and ongoing global problem. You might think that it is surely not happening here in Wilmington—but, sadly, it is.  Wilmington and the surrounding areas have a serious problem with human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking.

A Safe Place (ASP) has been working to help victims of human trafficking in this area since 2012.  The group works with local and federal law enforcement to identify victims and also actively seeks out victims through a variety of ways including, among others, jail visits, billboard advertising, hotline, online outreach and referrals. ASP provides substance abuse counseling on site and runs an emergency shelter for trafficking victims and their children as well as providing many other services including prevention education.

The mission of A SAFE PLACE (ASP) is to be "an empowerment organization focusing on prevention, advocacy and restoration to assist victims of commercial sexual exploitation and domestic minor sex trafficking that services the southeast region of NC .

B'nai Israel has a tremendous opportunity to change lives in our community by providing financial/volunteer support for ASP.
