For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before hand so that we would walk in them.
Ephesians 2:3
A few weeks ago, I was putting together a list of songs I learned as a child at church. One of the songs, "He's Still Working on Me," stuck with me and I couldn't remember all of the verses. Google to the rescue!
He's still working on me
To make me what I need to be
It took him just a week to make the moon and stars
The sun and the earth and Jupiter and Mars
How loving and patient He must be
'Cause He's still workin' on me
There really ought to be a sign upon my heart
Don't judge him yet, there's an unfinished part
But I'll be better just according to His plan
Fashioned by the Master's loving hands
In the mirror of His word
Reflections that I see
Makes me wonder why He never gave up on me
But He loves me as I am and helps me when I pray
Remember He's the potter, I'm the clay
These words have reflected back in Scripture as I have been reading in the Old Testament. People never learn (I say that with fingers pointing right back at Bridget). I learn how to trust God, forget and rely on myself... but then later I learn how to trust again. I learn that He is faithful but seem to have to learn it over and over again. I pray for answers to prayers but then I am surprised when the prayers are answered. Why? Was I not praying remembering the answers from before? Abraham, Isaac, Moses, David, the apostles.... all learned, forgot, relearned.
But isn't that the way it should be? Each time we "relearn" it's just a little different. He's working on a different part of the lesson. How loving and patient He is with me - His creation, His workmanship. I will never fully be perfect, but through the perfection of His Son, I can walk in the work that He has prepared for me to do. Walk as I learn and relearn lessons about His goodness, His faithfulness, His discipline, His will...
Today, remember that we are works in progress. Our completion will come when we enter into His presence. Until then, take heart in the work He is doing in you and the work He is laying before you. Remember He's the potter, we're the clay.
