MARCH 2024

MARZO 2024

MARCH IS.... / MARZO ES....

MARCH IS CEREBRAL PALSY AWARENESS MONTH

The goal of National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month is to push for positive change in education programs, the health care system, and the job market to give opportunities to those living with cerebral palsy.

Schools have begun implementing new programming to help students discuss and understand disabilities. The Cerebral Palsy Foundation’s “Just Say Hi” curriculum, which aims to help students engage with fellow peers who might be different from them, is just one of the many programs schools are implementing.

Businesses are showing their support by hiring people with cerebral palsy and providing accommodations to their employees. By hiring more people from different backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities, businesses can benefit from new perspectives and a more diverse workforce.

DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES AWARENESS MONTH

Each March, the National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), and their partners work together to create a social media campaign that highlights the many ways in which people with and without disabilities come together to form strong, diverse communities.

The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still sometimes face in connecting to the communities in which they live.

Family Focus Announcements!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO REBECCA DIAZ

Happy birthday to Rebecca, our Bilingual CSUN Family Support Provider.

Rebecca has her birthday all planned out. First, she is going shopping with her mother, then she's going to enjoy dinner with her family and finally she's going to catch a movie with her husband to end her day!

MEET LORDIE HONRADO

Welcome to Lordie, one of our new Santa Clarita Valley Family Support Providers. Lordie is mom to 3 kids, one of which has Down Syndrome. She and her family have been Family Focus Resource Center consumers for a long time; she may look familiar because she and her daughter appeared in one of our YouTube videos. They especially liked borrowing books and toys from our library.

In her spare time Lordie enjoys cooking, spending time with her husband and going to the gym. She says, "Family Focus has all the resources that you need if you have a child with a disability. They have helped me and my daughter in so many ways...Looking forward to helping more families."

MEET MONICA GARCIA

Monica is a new Bilingual Support Provider based in our Santa Clarita Valley office. She is a mom of three kids; two boys and a girl. Her 4-year old daughter is on the Autism Spectrum and also has a G-tube due to oral inversion. Her 5-year old boy has ADHD.

Monica recently graduated as a medical assistant and is in the process of going back to school to help her kids with behavioral and medical needs. She is very excited to join Family Focus Resource Center to help parents that are struggling to find support as she once needed the same help! We are happy to have you with us Monica!

COFFEE AND CONVERSATION

All three of our offices held Coffee and Conversation this month.

In the Antelope Valley, we were able to introduce our new staff members to everyone. We also intoduced Stout Heart Fitness who did a little exercise with our parents. In the end parents were able to interact with each other as we did a Valentines Day craft. Everyone left with a craft project, a stressball and a sign language bracelet.

In Chatsworth, we talked about ways to have a healthy and happy heart. Jake Weiner of Zooz Fitness shared an exercise routine. We all did a Valentine activity and everyone got to take home a craft to make with a loved one.

In Santa Clarita, we talked about heart health, did some self defense activities and made a craft.
