As you attend Peer-to-Peer sessions, social events, and other workshops hosted as part of the International Center's Summer Orientation Series, you'll have the opportunity to connect with the International Center's Summer Orientation Peer Advisors, current international students who are here to help you make a successful transition to U-M. Have questions about getting settled at U-M and in Ann Arbor? Join a live Question & Answer (Q&A) session with Summer Orientation Peer Advisors!
These sessions are designed to complement the Peer-to-Peer Conversation (P2P) recordings and slides available in the IC’s 2026 Summer Orientation Canvas Course. Each week, Peer Advisors will answer questions on select P2P topics in an informal, office-hours style format. You are welcome to drop in for a few minutes or stay for the full hour.
We encourage you to watch the related P2P recordings in advance so you can get the most out of the live discussion. Please note that Peer Advisors are unable to answer immigration-related questions. The first Q&A Session will cover the following P2P sessions:

Travel Prepared: Initial F-1/J-1 Students & Dependents
Documents to Carry for Initial Entry to U.S.
It's important to carry printed travel documents in your carry-on luggage so that they are accessible when you land in the U.S. In addition to the three documents mentioned above, F-1 and J-1 students are also recommended to carry the SEVIS I-901 fee receipt, admission letter, and financial documentation. Remember to sign your I-20 or DS-2019 with an ink pen on page 1.
SEVIS Transfer and Change of Level students are not subject to the 30-day arrival period.

Attendance at this event is strongly encouraged for both undergraduate and graduate international students, along with their family members who travel with them to campus. Highlights include sessions on cultural adjustment, maintaining immigration status, international student health insurance, and more. This is also a great chance to meet other new international students from all around the world! Don't miss this opportunity to ease into campus life!

Orientation Canvas Course
The International Center provides essential orientation resources through a dedicated Canvas Course. Access recordings and slides from virtual orientation sessions that have already occurred, important announcements, and a calendar of events. Incoming international students are strongly encouraged to enroll (click below and/or check your U-M email for an invitation to enroll!)

New International Students
There is a lot to learn about being an international student in the U.S. before you begin classes this Fall. To help guide new F-1 and J-1 students coming to U-M, the IC has a dedicated page for common questions like:
- How many online classes can I take?
- When should I plan to arrive on campus?
- I haven’t received my I-20 or DS-2019 yet. What should I do?
- Am I required to report in person to the International Center after arrival?

Watch Out for Phishing & Scams
Scammers often target new and incoming university students, including international students, with fake job offers, housing scams, football ticket scams, and messages asking for personal, financial, or login information. Some scams may arrive before you even get to campus.
If something seems suspicious:
- Don’t reply or continue the conversation.
- Don’t share your password, passport information, banking details, or payment.
- Don’t send money or deposit unexpected checks.
- If you shared your U-M login information, change your password right away.
