Dear FUMC family,

This Sunday is Baptism of the Lord Sunday. I will be preaching from Luke 3:21-22. With many words, Luke has told us of the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. Now with very few words, Luke transitions from the end of John’s preaching to the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. This transition is marked by Jesus’ baptism; however, Luke’s focus is on what happened after Jesus’ baptism. He tells us that heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove and a voice came from heaven claiming Jesus as God’s beloved Son. How wonderful it must have been for Jesus to hear his Father naming and claiming him! We, too, need to hear this affirmation and to know that we are beloved daughters and sons of the Most High. This Sunday we will have the opportunity to reaffirm our baptismal covenant, to dip our fingers in the water and to know ourselves as “Baptized and Beloved.” I hope you will join us.

In Christ,
Pastor Debra

"Baptized and Beloved"
Luke 3:21-22
Questions to ponder:

1. Luke tells us that Jesus was praying when he heard God’s affirmation. How have you heard God’s voice through prayer? What role does prayer play in your life of faith?

2. At his baptism, Jesus got in line with sinners and was baptized with them identifying with the “worn and weary” people. How might we live in such a way that others will come to know themselves as beloved by God, especially those who have been given cause to think they are less than loved?

TV Ministry Fund Revived!
In early November 2018, a letter went out to the congregation describing the precarious status of the TV Ministry Fund at that point--$7,351.92 which was barely enough to cover two more months of broadcasts @ $3,060 per month. The letter concluded with the question: What is God asking you to do to help spread His word through the TV Ministry of First United Methodist Church? You answered with a resounding affirmation of this outreach ministry by contributing enough to bring the fund total up to $20,511.62 as of January 6, 2019!! We thank all of you who contributed to the TV Ministry Fund and took a stand with Christ to keep the Word of God alive throughout the Piedmont across the airwaves of our local provider. Thanks to your generosity and commitment, we will continue to touch lives and spread the Gospel to a community hungry for the Word!
Serve Your Church
Attention all FUMC family...it is time again to start filling in our volunteer calendar for our Good News and Daddy at the Desk workers. Good News is a time during each worship service that the children ages 3 - 2nd grade are allowed to slip away for some kid friendly worship. It only takes about 30 minutes of your time and lessons are provided. Our Daddies at the Desk provide security for our nursery during the 10:55 service, these special guys (or gals) man the front door and monitor the Education Building. We REALLY need your help with both of these jobs during 2019. Sign up for available times by clicking the buttons below. If you have any questions or want to talk more about it please contact Kim Myers. 336-889-3103

Xenos - a grief support group
Xenos is a Greek word with a variety of meanings: guest foreigner, stranger, host, or friend. it is a fitting name for those who are experiencing grief as the journey with grief takes many forms. Grief is an unwanted guest in our lives and, whether we like it or not, we are grief's host. It is a journey that one should never make alone. Starting in February Pastor Debra will be leading this new group and is holding an informational meeting on January 31 at 11:00 am in the Epworth Room. During this meeting we will discuss the particulars of a support group and determine future dates and times for gatherings. Participants will need to obtain a copy of the book Grief Day by Day (ISBN 9781641521314) by author Jan Warner. If you would like to participate in Xenos but cannot attend on Jan 31, please email Pastor Debra at debraswing@fumc-highpoint.org or call her at 336-812-4361.
