Kids Gardening has ideas about plants and gardens, teacher resources, and grant opportunities.

Funding from this plate has impacted over 200,000 students in 2017 with lessons, materials, volunteers and teacher training. Annually up to $60K is distributed in grants to schools, FFA, 4-H and other Non-profit programs for Ag education initiatives by the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Council.

Maine Farm to School Cook-off
The Maine Department of Education, Child Nutrition office is seeking teams to participate in their annual Farm to School Cook-off
!
A school nutrition and student duo from each district/school will compete to prepare one breakfast and lunch meal. Each meal must be planned with two local ingredients that are grown, raised, caught or manufactured in Maine as well as one USDA food. A student, school nutrition director and professional chef will evaluate the dishes based on presentation, taste, creativity and feasibility to be used in a school nutrition program. President's Environmental Youth Award
 Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 President's Environmental Youth Award (
PEYA
).
The
PEYA
program recognizes outstanding environmental stewardship projects by K-12 youth, promoting awareness of our nation's natural resources and encouraging positive community involvement. The
PEYA
program celebrates student leadership in service projects to protect the environment and keep our global community healthy. Winners of this year's awards will be invited to a ceremony in Washington, D.C. in mid-2019, and have their project mentioned on EPA's website.
EPA will select up to two winners in each of EPA's 10 Regions - one regional winner for Grades K-5 and one regional winner for Grades 6-12.
All student projects must be sponsored by at least one adult over the age of 21. For application and eligibility information, visit their website.

he Youth Garden Grant has supported school and youth educational garden projects that enhance the quality of life for students and their communities.
A total of 25 programs will be awarded with award packages ranging from $500 to $2100 in value.

Lessons:
- Discover Christmas Trees. Grades K-5. This lesson is composed of six learning activities to teach about the Christmas tree. Science, history, and geography topics are used to explore the history of the Christmas tree, life cycle of a conifer, types of trees and how they adapt, work on a Christmas tree farm, and the ecology of conifer trees.
- Food Master: Measurement. Grades 3-5. Students will learn where the ingredients in a cookie are made and make chocolate chip oatmeal cookies to practice their measurement skills and fractional mathematics.
- Food Miles. Grades 3-5. Students will explore the economic and environmental benefits of buying locally grown food.
- Ethnobotany for the Holidays. Grades 3-6. How do you combine history, social studies, geography, and science, and wrap in a bit of holiday fun? By exploring ethnobotany!
