Funding from this plate has impacted over 200,000 students in 2017 with lessons, materials, volunteers and teacher training. Annually up to $60K is distributed in grants to schools, FFA, 4-H and other Non-profit programs for Ag education initiatives by the Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Council.

Our NEW 2019 Grant applications are now available on our website. There have been some changes to this year's program, but we will still be awarding $60K. There is a new grant category for Statewide Ag Education Organizations, new maximum awards, and some new deadlines.
- Ag Leadership and the new category will have 3 opportunities to apply in June, August and December.
- All other grants application deadline for submission is August 9, 2019.
*A reminder for 2018 grants that your final reports are due June 1st, unless you have requested a one-year, no-cost extension by email.*

It will be a day filled with great speakers, exhibitors, and award winners! Our keynote speaker is Liz Lipski, Professor and Director of Academic Development/ Nutrition Programs at Maryland University of Integrative Health. The conference will also include a plenary session by Janice Giddens who currently serves as the Director of Health and Wellness Partnerships at the National Dairy Council. There will be great breakout sessions to choose from as well!

Russell Libby Agricultural Scholar Applications Open
MOFGA is once again hosting the Russell Libby Agricultural Scholar awards and applications are now being accepted. March 20 is the deadline to apply for the Russell Libby Agricultural Scholar Awards. A $1,500 scholarship is awarded each year in each of these categories: MOFGA journeyperson program participant; Maine high school senior planning to study sustainable or organic farming (preference for colleges in Maine); and an educator for funds for a field trip/classroom project/school garden or similar project.

NorthEast Livestock Expo Kids Day
 Thursday, May 16, 2019
In 2018, Northeast Livestock Expo (NELE) held its sixth "Kids Day" for over 3000 school children in grades K-6. Students, chaperones and teachers participated in self-guided tours among multiple agricultural stations on the grounds. This annual event is held on Thursday from 9:30am-1:30pm, giving children the opportunity to see and learn about a variety of livestock and agricultural commodities, often with hands-on interaction.
The 2019 Kids Day will feature a similar variety of opportunities.

Mini-Grant Opportunities in Northern Kennebec County
Healthy Northern Kennebec is requesting applications from non-profits serving northern Kennebec County (Albion, Belgrade, Benton, China, Fairfield, Oakland, Rome, Sidney, Unity Township, Vassalboro, Waterville and Winslow). They are offering implementation grants up to $3000 to help successful programs reach their goals to increase access to healthy food.
We are looking for non-profits with proven success in the areas of: Food & Transportation; Wasted Food Recovery / Food Waste Diversion; Gardening / Grow your own food opportunities; Youth Engagement in local food systems and/or social justice work around hunger and poverty; Community Meals; Food Pantries/ Food Banks; and Local Food Access.
Application deadline: March 13, 2019.

The Maine Agriculture in the Classroom Association
The Non-profit, completely volunteer, portion of MAITC.
These funds are used directly to support teacher scholarships and recognition, and support volunteer participation for Ag education programs. Your donation is completely tax deductible and you can make a one-time donation or a recurring monthly donation which will support the mission, "to promote the understanding of agriculture and natural resources among students, educators, and the general public." Lessons:
-
From Sap to Syrup. Grades K-2.
Students will recognize how geography and climate allow for the growth of maple trees and the process of making syrup. They will identify the characteristics of maple trees that produce the best sap for making maple syrup and name the steps in the process of creating syrup from sap.
- Test Tube Hydroponics. Grades 3-5. Students will investigate the importance of nutrients for plant growth and discover how plants grow without soil by growing and observing plants in a test tube hydroponic system.
- Robots in High-Tech Farming. Grades 6-8. Students will discover the four main components of robots, explore how robots are used in agriculture, and program and operate a robot to address a farming challenge.
- Nutrition Across the Lifespan. Grades 9-12. Students will trace the energy and nutrition requirements of the human lifecycle from beginning to end and identify the physical and cognitive growth happening in each phase of life.
