Let's Exercise!
|
It doesn't really matter if I'm swimming laps or doing yoga, lifting weights, training for a triathlon or on the ballroom dance floor. I am, to some degree, obsessed with exercise. I say obsessed because I look forward to exercise, I miss it when I don't have enough and I think about it when I should probably be thinking about other things!
I'm the kind of person who gets an endorphin rush walking down the driveway to the mailbox!
But there is nothing in my personal world of exercise that comes even close to a long luxurious rollerblade on a warm day in early spring.
|
( I most always wear my helmet---this was a rare day without!)
|
The pristine, recently repaved bike path in our community is laid out like a shiny ribbon, smooth as glass. The Rail Trail meanders through wetlands, meadow and forest where I find myself gliding alongside
rolling fields, quiet thickets and beautiful vistas. With my headphones tucked under my helmet with favorite dance tunes playing, I especially love to blade early in the morning or right before sunset when the world comes alive in
Technicolor: earthy smells, twittering birds, little critters in the grass and a cool dampness in the air. Lapping up the freshness, while moving my body, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, I feel exceptionally alive. Suffice to say, my main challenge is the occasional bug between my teeth because my mouth is
open wide with a big smile!
I want to underscore the essential need for exercise here. It's part of my medical prescription for most every patient. And I know for some, it's the hardest thing to start or the most challenging habit to sustain.

|
|
For patients who are 'exercise averse,' I start slowly, perhaps introducing the 10 minute walk or an online yoga site. For those who need to spice it up, I help brainstorm new ideas. For those who need exercise in a more social setting, I work to find exercise groups or classes that appeal.
Exercise helps raise your threshold for feeling stress, it helps dissipate the stress you do have and it helps your body and mind become better perfused (i.e enhances your blood circulation,) which in turn,
amplifies all the other good work you are doing with your diet, mindfulness, nutritional supplements, botanical medicine and healthy living.
So! It doesn't much matter WHAT you do, but get off the couch, turn off the computer & get those bodies movin', movin'!
With wishes for an active, healthy and peaceful spring!

by Amy Rothenberg, ND
A few months after my twelfth birthday, I awoke suddenly in the wee hours to ambulance lights whirling across my bedroom wall. I heard banging in the hallway outside my door and loud unfamiliar voices. I woke to learn my father had died. Like many through the middle part of the 20th century he was a heavy smoker with unhealthy dietary habits.
He had

stressful, sedentary work and a large family to support. With elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol and being overweight, the massive heart attack that killed him, at least in hindsight, was no surprise.
We have come a long way. But though research is unequivocal about the positive impact of prevention and lifestyle medicine, the translation to patients often falls short.
Heart disease
remains the number one killer for both men and women in the United States. Naturopathic doctors are among a growing number of providers who use lifestyle and natural medicine to help prevent and if needed, treat heart disease.

Recipe: Chilled Cucumber Soup |
A few years back around the holidays, I cooked up a Soup of the Month Club gift for Kim who administers our NESH training programs. Here's one recipe from that collection for this warmer weather. Chilled soup seems like an oxymoron, but sometimes something light is exactly what's needed. I was blown away at the delicate pale celadon color of this soup. And if I were to give this soup a temperament, I would call it shy. It's not shouting out anything, but you notice & enjoy it for the simplicity and the perfect way the flavors meld together. For all of us concerned about the galloping rates of gun violence, here's an organization whose work we admire. From a public health perspective, gun violence is an epidemic. Gun violence has become the leading cause of premature death in the United States. Guns kill more than 38,000 and injury over 85,000 each year.
Everytown is a movement of Americans working together to end gun violence and build safer communities. Gun violence touches every town in America. For too long, change has been thwarted by the Washington gun lobby and by leaders who refuse to take common-sense steps that will save lives.
But something is changing. More than 4 million mayors, moms, cops, teachers, survivors, gun owners, and everyday Americans have come together to make their own communities safer. Together, we are fighting for the changes that we know will save lives.
