The Fiber Universe Newsletter                         January 2015

A new year, a new opportunity to set your Yarn Resolutions.  I set one last year that I had to complete one WIP (work in progress) before I could start a new project.  While I wasn't perfect, I am pleased to report that my WIP count is down!  I am now eagerly searching out new projects.  I have other goals for this year; we hope to start blogging, update Facebook whenever we get new yarn in store, maybe even publish some patterns or even start a podcast! Stay tuned...  What are your fiber goals for 2015?  Post them in our Ravelry group!

Speaking of new, you may have noticed that our newsletter has a new look to it.  It is our goal to highlight a wider variety of projects this year, so we have specific sections for knitting, crochet, weaving and spinning. We are also offering standing variety classes throughout the year; Dyeing, Drop Spinning, and Sock Class. This will allow you to see upcoming dates for all of 2015 and select the one that works the best for you.  We will continue to offer specialty classes throughout the year, so check our Classes page often!

For knitters looking for their next project, let me suggest Building Blocksthe year-long Block of the Month afghan!  This pattern is perfect for new or intermediate knitters wanting to expand their skills. The goal is to complete 1 block per month, and at the end of the year, assemble all 12 blocks into an afghan.  This afghan is knit out of 10 balls of SimplyWorsted by Skacel.
We are pleased to be able to offer a special promotion for this project- 20% off your purchase of 10 balls of SimpliWorsted!  You will also be enrolled for free in our Block-of-the-Month help class, offered every 2nd Saturday of the month from 12-1pm.  If you are having questions, or want to knit along with others, stop in during this time and we will help you with your block.
We look forward to another year of creating with you!

LADIES WHO LUNCH scarf by Jane Patrick

We have had lots of interest in Beginning Weaving on the Rigid Heddle loom. This little tool is designed with knitters in mind; it's portable, fast, and uses yarn from your stash.  In this section, we are going to highlight a different weaving project or idea each month.

We carry the Woven Scarves Book, a gem with 28 innovative patterns for the Rigid Heddle.  The Ladies Who Lunch Scarf is an easy plain weave, combining two fun yarns, to create a window-pane effect. Our store sample uses 1 ball of Fountain Hill and 1 ball of Eros II.

Spotlight on Spinning
Spinning Art Yarn-  Coil yarn from Thick 'N Thin Singles

When opening The Fiber Universe, it was important to us to supply quality fibers to our spinning friends.  We are going to use this section to highlight different spinning techniques, new fibers, or project ideas for your handspun yarns.

I was once fortunate enough to take a spinning class with Lexi Boeger, author of Handspun: New Spins on Traditional Techniques, which we carry in store.  Lexi is known for her art yarn techniques and willingness to spinning anything she can fit through her wheel.

One of my favorite yarns is created by spinning a thick-n-thin single, then plying over a core yarn, and scrunching up the single as you go to create the coils.  Check out this video on how to do it, by Camaj fibers. We also carry Camaj fibers, SoffSilk!  Pick up yours today!
