Participant Spotlight
Meet Neeve Chen, a junior at Woodcreek High School and a member of The First Tee of Greater Sacramento since 2009.  She volunteers at the Jr. Golf Academy at Diamond Oaks, teaches life skills lessons at The First Tee Junior Tour tournaments and participates in various Placer County Food Bank activities.  She maintains a 4.43 GPA and is a member of National Honor Society.  Neeve is also a year round competitive swimmer at Wolverine Aquatics Club.

Young people progress in our program by moving through levels that introduce new and more advanced concepts of golf and life skills.  The levels include  PLAYer, PAR, BIRDIE, EAGLE & ACE.

Neeve is in the Ace class, the highest program level of The First Tee, which focuses on setting goals for golf, career and education , and giving back to the community.  This is what she had to say about the class.

"Through the Eagle and Ace class experience, I have made many new friends, and further learned how to embody The First Tee's Nine Core Values and Life Skills. Through the Life Skills I have learned, I have become a more confident person in all aspects of my life. I really enjoy the classes, and all the volunteer work that comes with it. My favorite part of the entire experience is spending quality time with Coach Kelli! Coach Kelli is one of the life skills instructors and she plays an important role in my life. She is a fantastic role model and has many leadership qualities that I hope to work on. I can always count on her to be there for me as a go-to person; I know she always has my best interest at heart and she encourages me to be a better person at all times."

Sarah Debnekoff
Sarah Debnekoff graduated from Pleasant Grove High School and our program in 2014. During that time she was a wonderful volunteer to many of our programs and earned Birdie Certified level in her life skills.  Today, Sarah is a junior at Morehead State University in Kentucky, She is an exercise science major, with the goal of applying to physical therapy school upon graduation. Although golf has been up and down for Sarah due to a previous elbow injury, she has persevered; working hard each day in rehab to give herself the best opportunity to compete again.  With the spring season ahead, Sarah will be able to get back to competitive golf and give her team her full effort.

When Sarah is not working on her golf game, she works as a group fitness instructor; teaching spin classes and working as a fitness attendant. By working in these departments, Sarah has learned how important it is to take care of oneself; both physically and mentally. Sometimes work experience, can turn into a life altering experience as Sarah learned a few year back.  She was working as a life guard, when a two year old boy was discovered, blue, in the bottom of a hot tub. She proceeded to give him many rounds of compressions and ventilations; where soon after he began to breathe on his own. She stated, "I am forever grateful that I was available to help this boy, and to have an experience that has changed my life since."

Sarah hopes that her work ethic, and passion to make the world a better place, will make an impactful difference as she embarks toward her future career.
