Letter from the UBBA Board Treasurer

2022 is shaping up to be an amazing year for the utility industry and particularly the Utility Broadband Alliance. The recent passing into law of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) is a great win for the critical infrastructure sector, especially water and electricity utilities. The IIJA includes billions for the electric grid, water and wastewater, broadband infrastructure, and cybersecurity designed to maximize resilience. Members of UBBA have been working together to share information and answer questions associated with the IIJA funding to uncover opportunities to accelerate utility broadband strategies. UBBA will be hosting a series of webinars in May and June focused on the IIJA funding opportunities.  We welcome you to this important conversation. Information about the sessions will be posted on our website and social media.

After our first year as an independent 501c6 organization, UBBA membership growth is on pace to more than double by year end. This speaks to the growing impetus of private broadband for utilities, and the invaluable contributions of our members in driving, insightful, forward looking discussions to advance the utility understanding of the benefits and opportunities of broadband deployment. We spent much of the first quarter speaking at other industry events to raise awareness of the alliance and to share with utilities of all kinds and sizes the opportunity to join the membership.

As we move into the spring, UBBA will focus on the planning of its 2022 Summit & Plugfest which will be held the week of October 10th in sunny Coast Mesa, California. Our host utility, Southern California Edison, is excited to welcome participants and attendees to share, demonstrate or learn about the strategic impacts of broadband networks for key utility operations. The planning of the technical aspects of the Plugfest is well under way, as is the executive level conference. This year the Summit will inaugurate an Innovation Zone to showcase key current and upcoming technologies that deliver utility broadband enabled solutions for a secure and resilient electric grid. We hope you will join us in 2022 to accelerate the delivery and adoption of utility broadband infrastructure.

All My Best,
Mar
