IN NEED OF A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION?

HOW ABOUT SUNDAY SCHOOL IN THE NEW YEAR!

We currently have two adult Sunday School classes at Northminster. Each of them will be happy to welcome new members in the new year. Why not make that one of your New Years resolutions?!

Pastor Jillian leads one class that is currently finishing an intergenerational project and will return to its typical format in the coming year. They will be starting The Origin of Satan by Elaine Pagels this coming Sunday, January 11th. It is available through Amazon and Audible.

The Bible Study Class is led by Craig Henry. They just began the study of Marcus Borg’s important book Reading the Bible Again for the First Time: Taking the Bible Seriously but not Literally. It’s never too late to jump into this study with us! Books are available in our classroom.

Two great classes. Two new possibilities. Why not begin your new year with one of these classes? We think you will be glad you did!

OUR WORSHIP IN SONG

The Opening Hymn: As with Gladness Those of Old After reading the Epiphany gospel, William C. Dix penned this hymn. Dix, the manager of a marine insurance company, was also a gifted hymnwriter. Among his many fine contributions is "What Child Is This."

The Middle Hymn: Arise, You Light Is Come This hymn was first published by the Ecumenical Woman's Center of Chicago in the 1974 collection of hymn adaptations. Because We Are One People. Rugh Duck later included it in her own collection, Dancing in the Universe.

The Anthem: Psalm 27 paraphrase by D.H. Clark. ROCKINGHAM, arr. D. H. Clark.

The Communion Anthem: Alleluia by Jan Reese.

The Closing Hymn: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing The original version of Charles Wesley's hymn has received various alterations throughtout the years. This adaptation by George Elderkin utilizes a repeated ascription, "Jesus, the light of the world," and a refrain to create a rousing carol of praise.

Music, especially song, is the most human of the arts, It needs no materials or tools other than the ear and throat - along with mind and heart. When we sing alone, we are led out of ourselves into the world of the song. When we sing together, we create a community, a community in the sound. The group becomes more than the sum of its parts. It is creating beauty. - from Melodious Accord by Alice Parker
