Volunteer's Corner
Dr. ROHIT KONGARI
Rohit Kongari has a PhD in Biochemistry from Texas A&M University and currently works as a Postdoctoral scientist in the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Division (CBER) of the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA). He is a phage-biologist at heart with a strong technical background in Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Phage Genomics. With the comeback of phage therapy seeming imminent, Rohit's group at the FDA is interested in understanding how bacteriophages can be used in tackling antimicrobial resistance and how phage resistance can emerge in bacteria. Rohit's work involves a transcriptomics approach to examine the host-phage interactions between Staphylococcus aureus and it's phages.

Rohit plans to return to India and set up a lab to work on phage research and phage therapy applications in the Indian food, agriculture and health settings. Outside the lab, Rohit likes to play racquet sports, do stand-up comedy at open mics and is the percussionist for a local music band in DC. Rohit joined the Sci-ROI team this year with an intent to help Indian researchers transition back to India while also establishing a network of similar minded researchers who could turn into potential future collaborators.

Rohit can be reached via LinkedIn.
Dr. SANU SHAMEER
Sanu Shameer is a computational biologist involved in using mathematical models to study metabolism in biological systems. In his current role as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Plant Scientists, University of Oxford, he uses metabolic models to develop a better understanding of plant metabolism in order to devise metabolic engineering strategies for increased crop yield.

Sanu first heard about SciROI in 2021 from a collaborator who recently moved back to India and attended the 2021 annual event. As someone who has always planned on returning to India and setting up his own lab, Sanu instantly recognized the value of the work SciROI was undertaking and decided to join the SciROI volunteer team to help with the cause. He extensively helps the Sci-ROI team to bring all the information to the Sci-ROI website.

Sanu can be reached via LinkedIn.
