In one of last week’s Holy Week Lunches, I shared a poem from Irish poet Padraig O Tuama that I think summarizes how many of us feel about God from time to time (or maybe it’s week to week? Day to day?). To be clear, I only came across this poem due to Darrell Cluck’s excellent guidance, so thank you, Darrell!
I also find this poem to be timely because the Gospel lesson for Sunday is about “Doubting” Thomas. I have a soft spot for Thomas, as I am convinced I would have been him in the same situation. And I find labeling him as “Doubting” for two millennia deeply ironic and short-sighted.
I wasn’t able to provide a written copy for the group last week, but as I now own the appropriate Padraig O Tuama collections, I can do so here. The following is from Kitchen Hymns and is one of around a dozen poems by the same name.
Do You Believe in God?
I turn to you,
not because I trust you,
or believe in you,
but because I need a direction for my need. You-
the space between me and death; you-
the hum at the heart of an atom; you-
nothing; you - my favorite emptiness; you-
what I turned away from and will turn to; you-
my ache made manifest in address; you-
silent you, what my friends saw as they died; you
contain what’s not containable; you -
shape of my desire-
-Padraig O Tuama

OUR WORSHIP IN SONG
The Opening Hymn: Alleluia! Alleluia! Hearts to Heaven Christopher Wordsworth, gifted nephew of poet William Wordswoth, served the Church of England successively as canon at Westminster, parish priest in Berkshire, and finally, bishop of Lincoln. This Easter hymn is on of his most enduring.
The Middle Hymn: Listen to Your Savior Call William Cowper was trained as a barrister. He suffered from severe depression, but during a time of welless he wrote this hymn based on John 21:15 - a dialogue between Jesus and the individual.
The Anthem: "The Lord is My Shepherd" from John Rutter's Requiem.
The Communion Anthem: Bread of the World by David Henne. Text by Reginald heber, 1827, alt.
The Closing Hymn: Joy Dawned Again on Easter Day This anonymous Latin hymn of uncertain date is one of the two earliest hymns assigned to a special season. From that beginning grew a full list of medieval Latin hymns assigned to specific times and seasons.
