Restorative treatments for lesions

with subgingival margins

Various approaches have been proposed for clinical cases where the margins of the cavity are subgingival.

A Quick Poll sought to learn more about subgingival margin restorative approaches to guide further research. A total of 533 practitioners answered the poll. Participants were presented with a clinical scenario, and the results revealed that:

24% would do crown lengthening and a root canal, 25% crown lengthening only, 11% root canal only, and 41% neither.
Most of the respondents (62%) would restore function with a full crown or onlay. Fewer practitioners would either place an endo-crown (12%), or a direct composite restoration (11%), or even extract and place an implant or partial denture (13%).
When asked about an emerging technique to restore the tooth called coronal marginal relocation (CMR), deep margin elevation (DME) or Proximal Box Elevation (PBE), about half of the practitioners have heard of (25%) or used the restorative technique (28%), but most were not aware of it (48%).

The PBRN allows research to move outside the walls of academic centers

I first discovered the National Dental PBRN as a pediatric dentistry resident. It was interesting to learn that clinicians in the field could contribute patient care data to help answer questions we face daily.

As a clinician, researcher, educator, and advocate for children’s oral health, the PBRN gives us the tools to answer very meaningful questions in the forefront of patient care.

A National Dental PBRN paper receives the "2021 OOOO Best Paper Award"

Congratulations to Dr. Kerr, the investigative team and participants of the study “Common Practices of Head & Neck Examinations in US Dental Offices.” Their paper was awarded the Millard Award, Oral Medicine Section for the best paper published in 2021 in the journal Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, and Oral Radiology. It described the cues used by dentists in the early detection of oral cancer.

Mental Health Screenings - MSDP

Thank you to the dentists, dental hygienists and office staff members who participated in the focus groups. We had 32 participants in 9 sessions held throughout the month of February.

Coronavirus Vaccine Acceptability and Readiness Among Dentists (CARAD)

Thank you to the practitioners who participated in the CARAD study. We had 537 practitioners participating in the questionnaire.

Remuneration is being sent now. The data analysis is in progress, and we look forward to sharing the results with you in the Summer!

Upcoming Studies

Post-Operative Pain - POPS

Aided by a mobile app, practitioners and patients undergoing potentially painful dental procedures will participate in this prospective cohort study to investigate presence, severity, and management of pain up to 3 weeks after the procedures.

Dental Implant Registry

Practitioners and patients with dental implants will participate in this prospective cohort study to create an implant registry and investigate the success of implant therapy over 3 years, as well as the rate of prosthetic and implant complications.
