June 4, 2026

As we begin Pride month, our Northminster community has a lot to celebrate. First, Pride in the Park is this coming Sunday, June 7 from 10-3pm at Forsyth Park. Northminster will have a table. Shelby Sheppard and Darby Miles will be setting the table up for us as the start time falls during church, but I would love to have as many of you as can be there join me when church is over. It’ll be hot, but we now have a church tent! Don’t forget your lawn chairs to sit at our table and make sure to wear your Northminster shirt!

The second celebration is our upcoming Plenty Supper. This is going to be a potluck worship service - meaning we’re going to eat while we worship - specifically geared toward celebrating Pride and showing the community that God’s table is one of plenty. This will be a worship service around the table including music, scripture, and communion, but more casual than our normal Sunday morning service. I would love for the room to be full with Northminster folks to love on those from the community, so please make plans to attend. There is a sign-up list (because of course there is!) outside my office so we have idea of who’s bringing what.

Finally, it seems that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in the Cluck family. Darrell’s daughter Rowena is a member at University Baptist Church in Austin - a fantastic church I grew up going to church camp with as a kid - and has recently stepped into their pulpit to share her gifts. And although I suspect Darrell would be a proud papa no matter what Rowena had to share, her preaching is truly special. Darrell requests that the members of Northminster remember Roher and her ministry through our Alliance of Baptist sister congregation in their prayers.

Rowena's sermon can be streamed here:

Alan Paton's famous novel, "Cry the Beloved Country" is perhaps the best-known statement of what it means tro live in South Africa under apartheid. It won awards as soon as it appeared in 1948 and has been made into an opera and a film. Paton was the founder and former president of the Liberal Party of South Africa, which was declared illegal by the Nationalist government in 1968. After a trip to the United States, he was deprived of his passsport by the South African authorities. He believed, says on commentator, "that there is a road away from destruction, and he stakes out the signposts along the road.

THE WORK OF PEACE

Give us courage, O Lord, to stand up and be counted,

to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves,

to stand up for ourselves when it is needful for us to do so.

Let us fear noting more that we fear you.

Let us love nothing more than we love you,

for thus we shall fear nothing also.

Let us have no other God before you,

whether nation or party or state or church.

Let us seek no other peace but the peace which is yours,

and make us its insttruments,

opening our eyes and our ears and our hearts,

so that we should know always what work of peace we

may do for you.

Northminster's Vacation Bible School will run July 26 - 30 for peschool through 5th grade. There is a sign-up sheet in the hall for volunteers either during VBS hours (meals, activities, etc...) or you may sign up to help out in other ways not associated directly with the VBS schedule. See Beth Mayfield for more information.

YOUTH FOOD PANTRY

The Youth Food Pantry has been a big success in the community. Each Sunday the youth ensure the pantry is stocked with items such as canned peas, corn, beans, soup, and canned meats. Other items include cereal, rice, pasta, protein bars, candy, juice boxes and any kind of packaged ready to heat and eat meals. So, as you do your weekly shopping keep this pantry in mind and pick up a few items to add to their stash. You can always place items in the youth room, kitchen or Renee's office. If placed outside the youth room please leave a note nearby specifying items are for the pantry. Thanks for helping to support this outreach mission!

CHURCH LIFE

"PLENTY SUPPER"

Sunday, June 21 at 6pm at Northminster

This will be a potluck provided by the Northminster membership. Please see the sign-up sheet indicating what you will bring so we may plan accordingly. Thank you!

A CONTAINER FOR CUBA

Last week's newsletter article stated we are again trying to ship a container to Cuba to help with the crisis there.. With no electricity, our partner church is planning on installing a solar panel system to completely electrify their church building.

We are aiming for the end of June to have purchased items shipped to Miami. The cut-off date for churches to send their items for the container is July 10, so the container will be loaded then for shipment to Cuba.

If you can give to our effort at Northminster please write a check or access our PayPal account. In the memo line please put “mission container”. DO NOT put the word “Cuba”!

Thank you so much for anything you can do to help our sisters and brothers in Ciego de Avila. Our gifts to them say that we care and are in solidarity with them during these difficult days there. They will also do a lot of good. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to DH Clark or Craig Henry.
