Holy Week
at Lake of the Isles
March 25th - April 1

Palm Sunday traditionally marks the beginning of Holy Week.  According to scripture "green branches were cut  from the trees and placed on the road" as Jesus entered into the city. In Jewish tradition, palms had often been associated with victory. The crowds shouted, "Hosanna" which means God save us. It was a festive day as pilgrims from all around the Mediterranean Sea gathered to celebrate the week of Passover.

Our Palm Sunday Service at Lake of the Isles on Sunday, March 25th at 9:30 will be a festive day as well. The Sunday School children will process with their palms. The service will include a choral reading of the Passion Story According to St. Mark woven together with the music of Dietrich Buxtehude's sacred cantata "Christ, the Life of All the Living." The choir will also perform one of the most beloved anthems for Palm Sunday, Jean-Baptiste Faure's The Palms.

Immediately following the worship service, Don Holzschuh will be serving a family style pancake breakfast. Guests will be ushered to tables, and pancakes will be delivered fresh off the griddle to the tables.  Proceeds will benefit the Lake of the Isles Camp Scholarship Fund.

During the pancake breakfast, the children will be invited to the Parsonage for an Easter egg hunt. They will be divided into two groups of pre-school aged and Sunday School aged children.

On Thursday, 29th at 6:00 pm, our First Communion class will be holding a Seder Meal to mark Maundy Thursday. The congregation and friends are invited to participate in this meal as well. Please help us prepare for this meal by contacting the church office.

Good Friday, 30th commemorates Jesus' death on the cross. The 7:00 pm evening worship service lead by the choir will mark in readings and music Jesus' journey to the cross and his burial in the tomb.

The Easter Vigil on Saturday, March 31st at 8:30 pm celebrates the mystery of the resurrection and the promises given to those baptized into Christ's death. The worship service begins outside and moves into darkened church where the stories of salvation are read.  The service concludes by "breaking the fast" with champagne and hot cross buns.

Two worship services will be held on Easter Sunday, April 1st  at 9:30 am and 11:00 am to celebrate Christ's resurrection from the dead. The choir and guest musicians will perform at both services.  A Scandinavian Easter Brunch will be served at 12:00 noon.  Reservations are available through the church office.

Join us in worship for our Holy Week journey of renewal and new life to Easter!

Peace, Pastor Arden Haug

Irish Music for St. Patrick's Day Worship

Many Roman Catholic and Protestant churches celebrate the life of St. Patrick as a missionary to Ireland. At sixteen, Patrick was kidnapped by Irish pirates and sold into slavery in Ireland. He himself admitted that up to this point he cared little for God. He escaped after six years, returned to his family in southwest Britain, and began to prepare for ordained ministry. He later returned to Ireland, this time to serve as bishop and missionary. He made his base in the north of Ireland and from there made many missionary journeys with much success.

We will celebrate the missionary life of St. Patrick in our morning worship service on  Sunday, March 18th. Irish music will be performed by Tom Klein, a master uilleann piper. The uilleann pipes are a unique Irish bagpipe. Instead of standing and playing, performers sit and pump a bellow with their elbow.  He will perform for the Sunday School as well.

Working Speaker Series

Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do. Many people within our congregation are engaged in fascinating work, and this series gives us an opportunity to learn more about what they do.

The next segment of the series will be  Sunday, March 18th featuring Jennifer Lundblad. Jennifer is President and CEO of Stratis Health, a non-profit health care quality improvement organization. Her entire career has been in non-profit management, in both education and health care.  She also has extensive experience as a non-profit leader and volunteer, serving on nonprofit boards of directors (including as LOTI's representative to the Neighborhood Involvement Program board) and as a volunteer adult literacy tutor and a volunteer Big Sister. Last summer, Jennifer traveled to Uganda as part of a humanitarian team with American Refugee Committee, a Minneapolis-based non-profit which provides services in refugee settlements around the world.  She has an MBA in public and non-profit management, and a PhD in organization development.

Jennifer's talk will take place after a brief coffee break following the Sunday morning service. Those who are interested will be invited to take their coffee/tea into the Christy Room for about 45 minutes. The first 15-20 minutes will be an informal talk by Jennifer, leaving the remaining time for questions from those in attendance.
