YOUTH FOOD PANTRY

I hope by now you’ve seen our Little Free Panty/Blessing Box at the education end of the building. This is a project that our Youth have taken responsibility for, and they’ve been doing a marvelous job of keeping it stocked, which means it’s being used! In fact, JK told me last Sunday that food is flying from the pantry almost as quickly as the kids refill it. And I have seen our pantry listed multiple times on social media along with other pantries around town, so people are aware of this resource. This is a good thing.

Moving forward, our Youth will continue to care for the pantry and while there is budgeted money to help fill it, the idea behind the pantry is “give what you can, take what you need.” So, the next time you’re at the store or putting together your online grocery order, please consider adding a few items for the Pantry. You can stock these in the pantry yourself, or bring them into the church and let our Youth take care of it.

If we all support this effort, we are helping the good work of our Youth and caring for our community.

Here’s a list of possible items for the Pantry:

-Tuna/chicken salad kits

-Chef Boyardee microwavable containers

-Instant Mac and Cheese

-Dehydrated mashed potatoes

-Ramen cups

-Canned veggies

-Vienna sausages

-fruit cups/Jell-O

-Sandwich crackers

-Peanut butter

Ephesians 3: 20-21 and Mark 6: 32-44

MUSIC MINISTRY

OUR WORSHIP IN SONG

The Opening Hymn: O God, You Give us Neighbors. The hymn is sung to a familair tune, Aurelia, written by Samuel Wesley, 1864. The text w as written by Carolyn Winfrey Gillette, a pastor and gifted hymn writer of over 400 hymn texts.

The Middle Hymn: Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us With Your Love. This African folk melody, adapted by Tom Colvin, 1969, was presented to the Church at Chereponi, Northern Ghana. Al Kraus, a missionary in neighboring Tamale, was enouraging the making of hymns to indigenous melodies. Colvin wrote these words to this adapted form of the melody in dedication to the Church at Chereponi. The hymn tune was named ChEREPONI. Composer Jane Marshall arranged the hymn for congrational singing in 1982.

Gospel Acclamation: A poem by Thomas A. Kempis based on John 3. The text was set to music by DH Clark.

The Anthem: Beloved, Let Us Love One Another was written by DH Clark in May 2000 as an anthem for the Northminster Choir.. It is based on Ist John 4: 7-12. The word is clear that we are to devote ourselves to loving one another..love comes straight from God.

The Communion Anthem: Naomi Kilpatrick, our Choral Associate, will sing the arrangement of How Great Thou Art that country singer Chely Wright sang at the memorial service for Rev. Dr. Welton Gaddy.

The Closing Hymn: You Are Called to Tell the Story. Rev. Ruth Duck wrote the hymn (text) we sing today. She noticed early in her career that the name of God was almost exculsively masculine. She began writing text that used inclusive language that ministered to all. We sing these words to the hymn tune REGENT SQUARE, composed by British composer Herny Smart, 1867.

During Lent, Christians are supposed to ask one way or another what it means to be themselves.

When you look at your face in the mirror, what do you see in it that you most like and what do you see that you deplore? If you had only one last message to leave a handful of people who are most important to you, what would it be? Of all the things you have done in your life, which is the one you would like most to undo? Which one makes you the happiest to remember? Is there any person in the world or any cause you would die for? If tomorrow was your last day on earth, what would you do with it?

To hear yourself answer these questions is to begin to hear something not only of who you are but of both what you are becoming and what you are failing to become. It can be pretty depressing all in all, but if sackcloth and ashes are at the start of it, something like Easter may be at its end. Frederick Buechner, Listening to your Life
