NIH Technology Opportunity Webinar
This new benchtop device uses acoustophoresis to replace the cell washing steps of the labeling processes in which cells are transferred from one suspension buffer to a new one.
- This action occurs along a microchannel etched into a chip the size of a microscope slide.
- Fluids from the two buffers flow together along this channel side by side forming two adjacent non-mixing streams in this laminar flow environment.
- An acoustic standing wave is formed along the center of this microchannel using an ultrasound transducer.
- When the cells in one buffer stream encounter this standing wave, they are pushed into the adjacent buffer stream resulting in the cells being washed by a new buffer solution.
- The radiolabeling procedure is made up of many cell washing steps with different buffer solutions as well as cell concentrating steps required for the radiolabeling incubation step.
Leveraging the small-scale, chip-based function of acoustophoresis by chaining together a series of chips, the radiolabeling process is automated with each chip performing a single step in the process which can be engineered into a single benchtop instrument.

Build a Better Foundation Series:
Inflation Reduction Act
November 16, 2023 | 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.
David Reed, Esq., Reed Business Law
Americans pay more for prescription medicines than any other country, and the Biden administration has committed to changing that. Through Medicare, the U.S. government already pays for many prescriptions for those age 65 and over. In 2022, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). It aims to save $25 billion annually on pharmaceutical drugs by 2031.
The IRA intends to achieve these savings by requiring marketers of certain drugs to negotiate price reductions with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). Big Pharma argues, and recent lawsuits allege, this requirement violates those marketers’ First and Fifth Amendments rights under the U.S. Constitution. If the law is allowed to remain unchanged, they predict a loss of profits that will force pharmaceutical companies to pull back on developing groundbreaking new treatments. This means they will license fewer compounds in development, pay lower up-front fees for those they do license, make fewer success payments for the drugs that move through development, and share smaller royalty percentages on the drugs that do make it to market. Speaker will discuss the realistic impacts of the IRA and the lawsuits, and how they will they effect drug developers.

Ramping Up Business Development Resources at Heyground Harlem
As part of the drive to expand our business incubation capacities at Heyground Harlem, they will be launching alumni-led skill-share workshops and expanding our ecosystem partner workshops in the coming months.
The skill-share workshops are designed to offer hands-on knowledge and facilitate collaborative incubation through our peer learning model. Last month, Communtas hosted two pilot workshops: a hybrid fundraising workshop led by Josue De Paz (Cohort 6 alum and First Tech Fund founder) and a virtual marketing workshop led by Monique Marshall (Cohort 9 alum and Black to Business founder).
The partner workshops connect changemakers with resources in the local impact ecosystem. Communitas recently partnered with fellow Siegel Family Endowment grantee PiTech @ Cornell Tech to host a "speed tech dating" workshop where alums and cohort 11 founders consulted on their ventures with graduate students working at the intersection of public interest and technology.
Communitas will be rolling out ongoing skill-share and partner workshops in 2024, which will be accessible to Heyground Harlem members, cohort participants, alumni, and guests. Stay tuned for updates!
