Newsom Administration Commits 20 million Investment for 988 Crisis Centers
Dear Colleagues,

CBHA is proud to share that our co-sponsored budget proposal to garner funds for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline call centers, of which 5 CBHA members operate, has been approved for $20 million!

Last year, Congress took historic action and unanimously passed legislation designating “988” as the new three-digit alternative to “911” for mental health crises nationwide. CBHA, the Steinburg Institute and Kennedy Forum worked with CBHA members Didi Hirsch, WellSpace Health, Kings View, Buckelew, and Felton Institute to create a proposal to garner immediate funding. CBHA and our partners applaud the Administration for their historic investment to combat a growing mental health crisis.

“988 is the dawn of a new era for suicide prevention and this new funding demonstrates California’s understanding of the vital role Crisis Centers play in connecting people to life saving interventions. Moving forward together, we can realize a full continuum of care that, in true California spirit, will lead the nation in behavioral health crisis response.” – Dr. Jonathan Porteus, Chief Executive Officer of WellSpace Health

“This monumental investment in California’s 988 crisis centers shows the Newsom Administration’s incredible commitment to all who have suffered trauma, thoughts of suicide, and mental illness, including youth, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ communities. We are enormously grateful to be able to save so many more lives together!” - Johnathan Goldfinger, Chief Executive Officer of Didi Hirsh.

"This historic investment in 988 highlights California's commitment to innovative solutions to combat a growing mental health crisis. Kings View applauds the Newsom Administration for it's leadership and looks forward to working with the state to support mental health for all communities across California." Amanda Nugent, Chief Executive Officer of Kings View.

Thank you to all who advocated on behalf of this proposal, together we have truly taken a historic step.
