The Newton Farmer
July 2019
July is one of our busiest months on the farm, but that's OK because being busy makes us happy.

Farm Camp, Farm Sprouts, and Farm Babies are in full swing. Learn more about our summer camp team in the Staff Spotlight section.

On July 22 we will host our annual Dinner on the Farm. There are still a few tickets left! We hope to see you at this special event.

Speaking of Dinner on the Farm, this month we're featuring The Village Bank, our Premier event sponsor. We're so grateful for their support.

Staff Spotlight
Summer Education Staff

Summer camp is off to a great start! We couldn't do it without our passionate, hard-working team. We asked them to share what they enjoyed during the first week of camp.

FARM CAMP STAFF
Charley:  I learned a lot about myself this week---to be patient and appreciate the little things.

Flannery:  It's really fun to witness kids with a food purpose, the pure joy when kids recognize plants around the Learning Garden.

Melissa:  During snack preparation I asked, "What's a flower I can eat?" and the kids responded in chorus, "Nasturtium!"

Zack:  This week has been really amazing; I've learned as much as the kids have.

INTERNS
Maddie:  I loved spending time outside, and the kids are so cute! This is a beautiful place to spend my mornings.

Emily:  I am able to see our food from picking to compost. We are learning a lot about each other and the community.

Shanae:  It's been fun! The kids have really enjoyed making and eating snack . . . and so have I! I've really enjoyed the team building.

Notes from the Farm
Karyn Novakowski, Executive Director

A few months ago I had the pleasure of sitting in on one of our Handmade Pasta classes. When we sat down to enjoy the pasta, I asked the woman sitting next to me about her connection to the Farm. She told me that she and a former coworker split a CSA share and meet weekly on the Farm to catch up on happenings in their lives and decide who is going to take that week’s kale. She called the Farm her happy place.

I think a lot of us can relate to that sentiment. I know I can.

Each week I get to witness the mix of CSA sharers, summer camp attendees, gleaning and field work volunteers, staff members, and interns mingle in the fields. Conversation winds its way through weather to favorite recipes to how sweet Boyd the farm dog is. Chickens and people meet like old friends. And that makes me happy.

As the day comes to a close, the sun dances across the greenhouse roofs, sending a warm glow over the land, like an embrace, and a thank you from the Farm---for tending to it, keeping its memory alive, and sharing its special qualities with our community.  And nothing makes us happier.

If the Farm is your happy place, too, please take a moment to share why. Visit us on Facebook , leave a comment about why you love the farm on this post . If you would rather send me an email, feel free to do so at karyn@newtoncommunityfarm.org.
