Mr. Bagnato
Welcome Back to School! I hope everyone had a great break filled with wonderful memories.

It was a short week, but it already feels like we are back in the swing of things here at Newton. Thanks to Amy Huyffer, Diane White, and all the parents for a super smooth first day of the Ski and Snowboard Program. I am very excited to see so many students signed up to get exercise and socialize with friends outside.

You may remember this letter that I shared before break. As a follow up, I want to inform you that there will be a survey coming out from our consultant in mid-January and she is tentatively planning to meet with students, parents, and staff on January, 22nd. More details will be coming soon.

3/4 News

Short weeks are challenging for all of us. We have focused on reviewing expectations and strengthening classroom community. On Thursday, students had the opportunity to work in pairs to construct an igloo that would protect Lego Jacques Cousteau and Lego Sylvia Earle as they faced brutal Arctic winds (in the form of a hair dryer).

The fourth graders went to the Hood Museum and looked at Native American art. They were fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at the new museum! Remember that this Monday, we will be heading outside in the afternoon for outdoor education.

Passion Project: Students are finishing up their projects in preparation for a celebration of their learning. We have tentatively scheduled this for Tuesday, January 29th at 5:00 p.m. at the school. During this time, students will present their projects, talking about why they chose their project, including their learning, challenges, accomplishments, and what happens next.

Cranes, cranes, and more cranes: Students will be making cranes as part of a fundraising event for the Asia Cottom charity. Asia was a sixth grade student who perished on September 11th. We are hoping to have a “Crane Fest” in the spring with activities. More on that later.

We often talk about the importance of literacy--the ability to read text. Just as important, however, is being able to "read" media messages. Particularly in our current environment, where digitalization is not only feeding users and consumers with a constant stream of media messages, but are gathering information about us to better target those messages, is it crucial that children know how to think critically and ask questions as they interact with different types of media.
Media literacy will be the focus of some of our library classes over the next several weeks. Follow the library on Twitter or Instagram to follow along with us.

Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a wonderful break. We will be having a Farm to School meeting on Thursday, Jan. 10th from 3:00-4:00. Our next taste test will be held on Tuesday, January 29th, during all four lunch periods. We will be presenting a beet recipe that will feature this delicious taproot, so stay tuned. Parents and community members are always welcome to come in, taste test, and vote alongside the students; you can even stay for lunch!

Hope to see you there!
