Our next CCA Advocacy Committee Meeting is on Monday, January 24, 2022 from 9:30AM - 11:00AM.

At this meeting we will review the CCA Advocacy Committee meeting procedures, review actual bills up for our consideration, review how the Capitol Gang operates, and other CCA protocols.

At this meeting, we will also launch our Call to Action for member advocates to contact their state legislators to share CCA’s legislative priorities for the 2022 General Assembly. We will share our plans for preparing member advocates on how to contact their legislators by phone, email or in person throughout the month of January.

New Bills to Review

Generally, the CCA Advocacy Committee will discuss a bill and decide whether to keep it on our list for consideration of a position at the next meeting. Remember, you must be a Member of the Colorado Center for Aging to vote on bills. The bills will be considered for a position of Support, Strongly Support, Oppose, Amend, or Monitor. The committee also may take a position of Support with Amendments or Oppose with Amendments.

Please review the bills before the meeting

and come prepared to discuss.

As of January 22nd, there are 44 bills in our CCA Bill Tracker that are identified for discussion. We cannot follow 44 bills, so we need to focus on the bills that have the most impact on older adults. Please review the list in the Bill Tracker (see link below) and come prepared to share your top bills that you think we should follow and become involved with. Remember that we will need volunteers to step forward to follow the bills we are tracking. Be prepared to get involved in the bill tracking.

For Solo Agers, A Roadmap for a Secure Future

"Planning for the long-term can be unsettling, because aging is complicated and stacked with complexities and risks. But if you are a solo ager - someone without a spouse or children - enacting a plan will, over time, turn out to be one of the smartest things to do. Starting out, the toughest question to address is, where do I begin? ..." - READ MORE

Opinion: Colorado must address workforce age discrimination

"For years, older workers from every corner of the state have told me their frustrating and often heartbreaking stories of age discrimination that prevented them from landing needed jobs, that they faced once in the workplace, and that they felt as they were forced out ..." - READ MORE

A mental health hold can help Coloradans in crisis.

But for many who are seriously ill, that’s where the help stops

"It was the most hopeful Sandy Sharp had felt in a long time. Her 29-year-old son, Drew, had landed a bed at Grant House, a residential treatment facility in Denver. He was on track to stay there for a year. It seemed to be a huge breakthrough for Drew, whose schizophrenia and substance use had set him on a decade-long path of forced hospitalizations, homelessness and cycles in and out of jail ..." - READ MORE

Rebuttal to the article below "Public Comment on Xcel Energy's Electric Future"

We had a comment from a reader about the article "Public Comment on Xcel Energy's Electric Future." He requested that we share information on how wind farms use and need fossil fuels to operate. Below is an article on this topic. Note that the articles we share in this newsletter do not necessarily express the opinions and positions of Colorado Center for Aging.

Wind turbines cannot be built and cannot operate

on a large scale without fossil fuels

"Greater direct use of natural gas for heating and cooling, water heating, cooking and clothes drying can cut carbon emissions nearly in half. That is because natural gas appliances and the network that delivers the energy to your home is extraordinarily efficient ..." - READ MORE

Public Comment on Xcel Energy's Electric Future

"Coloradans have the opportunity to change Xcel Energy's climate course. Every day the power used by Xcel customers mostly comes from expensive, polluting, and climate-wrecking coal and gas plants. But you have an opportunity to change that. Xcel submitted a draft energy plan to Colorado regulators at the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and you can chime in as a Colorado customer with YOUR vision for a clean energy future in Colorado ..." - READ MORE
