World Bank vs BRICS Bank: Addressing International Poverty & Debt

US Dollar & World Bank Corporate Interests May Be Waning

Vijay Prashad and Dilma Rousseff

In a recent article in Popular Resistance, award-winning Journalist Vijay Prashad compared the philosophies behind the recent appointment of the new World Bank Head, Ajay Banga and the New Development Bank’s new Chair Dilma Rousseff. The New Development Bank is called “BRICS Bank”.  Their Board of Governors ’s includes representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, BRICS countries. The World Bank is heavily influenced by the United States and the US President historically appoints the chair. The New Development Bank Chair is elected from member countries. And that’s just one of many differences that makes BRICS operating structure and policies more democratic and equitable.

Banga comes to his new position from the world of corporate power and supports an agenda that props up the dollar at any cost above all other currencies. Rousseff comes to her position as former President of Brazil. Prior to that she served as a cabinet minister to former President Lula, and as his chief of staff. She took charge of the Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento (Growth Acceleration Program) or PAC, which organized the anti-poverty work of the government. Their approaches to finance couldn’t be more different, with Rousseff’s focus on providing anti-poverty programs and services without burdening the people of Brazil with more austerity and debt.

We’re delighted to have Mr. Prashad discuss the nuances of these differences and what they might mean for addressing poverty internationally, using fiscal vehicles that do not levy debt on the most vulnerable, and the lessening of influence of the American dollar.
