Textbook Information and Longhorn Textbook Access

How Does My Student Find a List of Needed Textbooks?

The University Co-Op is a not-for-profit corporation proudly owned by the students and faculty at UT since 1896. One of the ways the Co-op supports campus is by compiling the official book list each semester. Visit universitycoop.com to find course-specific textbooks. As professors finalize their syllabi, they will share information with the Co-op, so encourage your student to check the list again as we get closer to the start of the fall term.

Fall 2024 Course Materials from the University Co-Op

The Fall 2024 course materials list will be available mid-July. Students will access their course materials via Canvas (canvas.utexas.edu). Remind your students that they have up until the 12th class day to opt out of materials for a full refund. Shopping early means having access to lower cost physical course materials like used copies and loose-leaf versions.

Longhorn Textbook Access (LTA) - Digital Textbook Access

LTA was established so that when professors require a digital textbook and/or courseware, students have immediate access to the materials from the first day of class, and ensure students receive the materials at a lowest available price for new materials. Billing for LTA materials goes through a student’s What I Owe account after the 12th class day. Students who have LTA materials or courseware are emailed about it throughout the beginning of the semester. If the textbook is not part of LTA, in most cases it is purchased at the University Co-op store, where the professor will have arranged to have copies available at the start of the semester. Some of these books have courseware and may come with a code the student uses to acquire the courseware or with instruction for how to purchase the courseware from the publisher.

Action Items:

Happening Now: Schedule Check-In Timeslot

Students living in an on-campus residence hall, Dobie Twenty21 or 2400 Nueces are greatly encouraged to visit their housing portal to select a check-in timeslot for Mooov-In. At their check-in time, students will first go to their designated check-in location to pick up their room keys, a parking pass and more before moving their belongings into their new home. Information on the different check-in types is available in the housing portal, but please see UHD’s Mooov-In Guide and 2400 Nueces Mooov-In Guide webpages for full details of your student’s particular check-in process. Students can schedule their check-in timeslot up until Mooov-In but are encouraged to do so promptly to help UHD prepare for their arrival.

July 22: R Permit Waitlist Deadline

Students living in our halls who wish to bring their car to campus can currently apply for an R permit to park in specific garages. All students with room assignments have been emailed with instructions on how to enter the R Permit waitlist. The deadline is soon – July 22 – so encourage your student to follow the instructions and place themselves on the waitlist promptly. Permit offers will begin going out on July 24.

July 31: Self-Directed Room Swap Ends

Any student with a room assignment currently has the option to swap rooms through the housing portal’s room swap page. Your student will be able to search for available rooms and switch through July 31. Roommates who wish to move together during the room swap time frame must both select the same room to move to. After July, room swaps will remain possible on a rolling basis through submission of the housing portal’s room change request form, which students will gain access to on Aug. 1.

Exploring Campus Resources

Now that your student has selected their room (or received their room assignment), it’s a great time to start exploring what they’ll have access to on the Forty Acres. Check out UHD’s recently published Spotlight feature for a roundup of the many resources available just steps away from your student’s new campus home.

Packing (and Planning) for Mooov-In

Preparing for your student’s move to campus can be overwhelming and UHD is here to help with comprehensive guides on everything from packing to parking to useful lingo to know. In the lead-up to Mooov-In, please keep an eye on our website for updates to the Mooov-In Guide page and new spotlight features communicating important information relevant to this year’s process. If your student has scheduled their check-in timeslot, great – they’re sitting well prepared at the moment. But do be aware that there are a few essential tasks to complete prior to Mooov-In, such as filling out and submitting the emergency contact form online, and completing all applicable medical clearance requirements. Please see UHD’s Mooov-In Guide page for more information.

Contract Cancellations

If students need to cancel their residence hall, Dobie Twenty21 or 2400 Nueces contract, there is currently a $1,000 cancellation fee. This cancellation penalty will reach a peak of $2,000 after Aug. 1If the student paid a $300 prepayment, this will be applied to their applicable cancellation penalty and the student would be responsible for the remaining balance. If the prepayment was deferred during the contract process, students will see the full balance owed for the cancellation fee. Students must email UHD’s housing team to cancel.

Traditions Corner

Across the American frontier in the 1820s, many seeking a new start began moving to Texas, known as a place of unlimited opportunities. As they left their homes and began their journey, these pioneers carved three letters on their doors and fences:

GTT… Gone to Texas!

Texas remains a place of limitless possibility and this pioneering tradition continues each year as thousands of students from around the world start their Longhorn journeys as new students at The University of Texas at Austin. Gone to Texas is a unique celebration is rich in UT tradition. Each year on the evening before the first day of classes, all new students gather on the Main Mall to formally mark their arrival as the newest members of UT community.
