Hello Longhorn Family!

With registration just a few days away for New Student Orientation and Family Orientation, our campus is excited to meet you and your student this summer. As family members of our newest Longhorns, you play an essential role in your student's transition to UT and we look forward to supporting you through this process.

Keeping members of our community safe is one of the University’s highest priorities. This applies to their personal physical safety and their digital security. As an admitted student, your student should already have a UT EID (electronic identification) and password. That is just the first step to ensuring their digital privacy and fostering a sense of independence. Each student’s EID and password are unique to them and are used to log in to all UT platforms. In this issue, we’ll go more in-depth on the importance of EIDs, and how your student can grant you access to certain information.

While we often refer to the resources available to support your student, we want you to know about one important support system that is there for you, the Texas Parents Association. Below, we introduce you to the Texas Parents Association, its benefits and how you can become a member.

Registering for Orientation

Action Items:

March 20-22

Registration opens for New Student Orientation. If your student has already completed their enrollment deposit, encourage them to register for orientation as soon as possible.

March 20

Registration opens for Family Orientation. We highly suggest you register for the same session as your student. NOTE: Family Orientation is a separate registration process from New Student Orientation.

We are excited to get you and your student in a 'Longhorn state of mind' at orientation this summer. Registration for New Student Orientation and Family Orientation programs are opening March 20–22. Below is helpful information to support you and your Longhorn through the orientation registration process. In our next issue, we'll share more about what you can expect from both orientation programs.

New Student Orientation:

  • New Student Orientation registration will open March 20 – 22 at 3 p.m. each day.
  • Seats will be released by college and school as listed in the below chart. Students should reference the primary college or school on their acceptance.
  • Spaces in orientation are dedicated to each college and school so a student whose registration opens on March 21 or 22 will not be at a disadvantage.
  • Once registration opens for a college or school, it will remain open until each session closes.
  • Students must have satisfied their enrollment deposit in order to register.
  • Incoming students are encouraged to register early so that they receive their preferred session and date.
  • Fall classes are metered for each session so that all students will have an opportunity to register for classes that will keep them on time with their degree program.

Meet Texas One Stop

Registration, student records, financial aid and billing services, all in one location

Texas One Stop is transforming the way student services are delivered on campus by providing financial aid, student billing, registration and student records support in a single, central location. In addition to the integrated center at the UT Tower where Longhorns can seek in-person assistance, Texas One Stop's website makes completing important steps in the enrollment process easy.

At Texas One Stop, students can receive answers to questions that span all of the following offices: the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, the Office of the Registrar and Student Accounts Receivable. Texas One Stop staff are cross-trained in all three areas to ensure that students receive prompt, coordinated support, as well as the services they need to succeed and stay on track to graduate.

For additional information, you can call 512-232-6988 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. CT and on Wednesdays between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. CT or email onestop@utexas.edu.

UT EIDs

Your student's UT EID and password enable them to use secure UT web services such as course registration, tuition and fee bill calculation, student address updates and ticket draws for intercollegiate athletic events.

Accessing Student Information

One of the biggest changes between high school and college is your student's independence. In the past, you may have completed tasks on their behalf like filling out forms, checking grades or paying bills. While some parents and guardians would like continued access to this information, the University recognizes the importance of students becoming self-sufficient so they can prepare for life beyond campus.

With this in mind, and in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), each student's information is secure and cannot be accessed without their EID and password. Students should not share their EID and password with anyone, including parents or guardians, but they can grant you permission to view certain information and take action on their behalf. Keep reading to learn more about these policies and processes.

Understanding FERPA

FERPA is a federal law that restricts access to educational records and any information that make the student's identity easily traceable. For more information, visit onestop.utexas.edu.

Gaining Access to Discuss Your Student's Financial Aid (FERPA Release)

Your student can complete an online FERPA Release Authorization form with the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) that will allow Texas One Stop to discuss your student's financial aid with you. This release will not give you the ability to take action on your student’s financial aid awards and it will not give you access to other FERPA-protected information such as grades or class schedules.

If your student would like you to have the ability to speak with Texas One Stop on their behalf, it is important that your student complete one form and provide consent per parent or guardian as soon as possible. Encourage your student to go to their My Financial Aid portal to complete the form to grant you access under the Documents tab. While completing the form, your student will be asked to create a separate password for you.

In addition to FERPA, your student can also grant you proxy access to their My Financial Aid Portal. Proxy access will give you the ability to complete tasks on behalf of your student, such as uploading requested verification documents. Your student will be able to grant proxy access under the Profile Information section of My Financial Aid.

Understanding eProxy

An eProxy is an electronic permission your student can give the University to grant you access to a limited set of actions on your student’s behalf. Please note that eProxy is different than proxy access for My Financial Aid mentioned above. Specifically, eProxy allows you to view and make payments on tuition and housing bills, as well as add funds to Dine-In Dollars and Bevo Pay. It will not give you access to grades, course schedules or class registration.

The website eproxy.utexas.edu has more detailed information, including step-by-step instructions on how to grant eProxy authorization in its FAQ.

Meet the Texas Parents Association

Join a community of Longhorn parents/families who will be your support system

Action Items:

March 20

The sign up portal opens for supporting membership in Texas Parents Association. Consider signing up for a one-year or four-year supporting membership.

Everyone Belongs at Texas Parents

The University of Texas at Austin recognizes that as your student starts their journey on the Forty Acres, it is also a new journey for you as their parent. Since you will play a vital role during your student’s time at UT, Texas Parents is here to help keep you informed, connected, and supported from now until graduation. Simply put, our purpose at Texas Parents is to help you help your student.

All parents/families of enrolled undergraduate Longhorns belong with Texas Parents. Through the Texas Parents Association, which our office manages, we bring community together to help make the Forty Acres seem closer to you, wherever you are in the world. In order to start receiving membership benefits, you must sign up for the membership level that best suits your family: supporting or complimentary. Families can sign up online for a supporting membership by giving a tax-deductible gift to the University beginning on March 20.

One-Year Supporting Membership

This supporting membership is designed as a starting point to grow with your student’s college experience, one year at a time. It is renewable each academic year with a tax-deductible $60 gift. Benefits at this level include access to the Texas Parents closed Facebook group where you can ask questions and get to know other UT families, a “Texas Parents, Texas Proud” t-shirt, discounts at a variety of Austin hotels and more.

Four-Year Supporting Membership

You can sign up for this supporting membership level with a $180 gift to the University and secure four years of benefits for the price of three. A Four-Year Supporting Membership is perfect for families who want to stay connected throughout their student’s college experience. In addition to all the member benefits available with the One-Year Supporting Membership, at this level you receive additional benefits, such as pre-sale windows for selected tickets from Texas Athletics, Texas Parents tote bags and a rental car discount, among others.

Learn more about the Texas Parents Association and the full array of membership benefits on our website. We can’t wait for you to show your support by making your own tax-deductible gift to sign up for a supporting membership. Irrespective of your membership level, the Texas Parents office is in place to support all parents if you have a question, big or small.
