Dear Peter, we discuss ATN capacity in the editorial. History to date indicates smaller vehicles have much lower line capacities. Next month we will discuss what is being done to address this issue and achieve capacities similar to bus rapid transit and light rail while using small vehicles.

EDITORIAL

ATN Capacity


According to Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative, transit line/lane capacity (measured in passengers per hour per direction (pphpd)) varies as follows:


·      Bus                             5,000

·      Bus Rapid Transit       9,000

·      Light Rail                   20,000

·      Heavy Rail                60,000


By contrast, cars are 2,000 pphpd.


ATN systems in public service have the following in-service dates, minimum headways (sec), vehicle capacities (passengers), and line capacities (pphpd):

Note that the line capacities shown are the maximum theoretical capacities based on the minimum headways and number of passengers. Actual demonstrated capacities are typically lower for the primary reason that the maximum number of vehicles have not been provided because demand is less than capacity.


Next month we will address ways ATN capacity is being increased by various suppliers.

Automated Transit Network Pilot Project

Atlanta Personal Rapid Transit Solutions (APRTS) is set to plan, design, construct, and operate a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) Pilot Project connecting the Skytrain at Georgia International Convention Center (GICC) and the Gateway Center Arena (Arena).

Chandigarh metro on shaky rails, minister hints at pod taxis instead


The Metro project in the tricity appears to be on shaky ground, as Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal Khattar suggested that “the ridership for Metro in Chandigarh doesn’t meet the required criteria, and new technologies like a Pod taxi could also be explored, which wouldn’t impact the city’s heritage.”

Bobsleds in dedicated lanes versus congestion pricing

Vinod Khosla’s vision of cities promoting the use of personal rapid transit systems (“Ride-sharing robo-pods are the future of cities”, Opinion, October 28) is clearly a self-fulfilling prophecy. His proposal to set aside dedicated lanes for a four-person autonomous electric vehicle presumably comes alongside the present system of dedicated lanes for pedestrians, cyclists and parked vehicles — not to mention those for bus transit and emergency vehicles.

Ride-sharing robopods are the future of cities


Self-driving, on-demand cars could change the way we move around cities and dramatically increase throughput of congested streets. Fleets of these low-cost electric vehicles should be built.

Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit (Walnut Station to HSC Station (October 18th, 2024)
