February 2025

From the President

Dear Peter, The momentum seems to continue to build with most of the activity in India. While India has typically been slow in committing to PRT/ATN, some of the announcements seem solid and will hopefully result in real deployments soon.

Probably the most significant news is that Nitin Gadkari, India's Minister of Road Transport and Highways has apparently stated that Pod Taxi is a unique solution to beat the traffic.

Accelerating the Future of Urban Mobility

Why ATN/PRT Is Leading the Transit Evolution

The transportation sector is undergoing a transformative shift toward scalable, efficient systems that prioritize accessibility and flexibility. Automated Transit Networks (ATN/PRT) represent the next logical step in this progression, aligning with decades of innovation while offering unique advantages over legacy systems.

The Evolution of Transit Systems

From heavy rail to light rail to bus rapid transit, the trajectory of mass transit has consistently moved toward smaller vehicles and denser station networks. ATN/PRT advances this trend further with:

  • Ultra-compact, automated vehicles enabling nonstop, on-demand service
  • Microstations integrated into neighborhoods, workplaces, and transit hubs
  • Dynamic routing that reduces intermediate stops, improving trip times by up to 50% compared to fixed-route systems

This model not only enhances user experience but also slashes infrastructure costs by minimizing land use and energy consumption.

Overcoming Market Barriers Through Collaboration

While ATN/PRT’s potential is clear, broader adoption requires addressing two critical challenges:

  1. Awareness Gap

Despite growing interest reflected in ATRA Pulse metrics, many planners remain unfamiliar with ATN/PRT’s capabilities. Strategic partnerships with urban developers and policymakers are essential to demonstrate proven deployments such as at Morgantown, Masdar City, Heathrow Airport, Suncheon and Nantong.

  1. Perceived Market Limitations

Clients increasingly demand vendor-agnostic solutions that allow technology benchmarking. While systems like the Boring Company’s tunnel-based EVs or Futran’s 20-passenger shuttles may not align well with ATN/PRT’s efficiency standards, their existence:

  • Validates demand for decentralized transit
  • Encourages healthy competition
  • Expands the pipeline for future ATN/PRT integration

A Unified Path Forward

The transit revolution thrives on diversity. By supporting all innovations that prioritize small-vehicle, high-frequency service, we:

  • Create a larger ecosystem for ATN/PRT to anchor
  • Accelerate regulatory frameworks favoring automated networks
  • Position ATN/PRT as the optimal choice through performance, not promotion

Our Call to Action:

  • Engage clients with side-by-side cost/benefit analyses
  • Collaborate with "non-traditional" providers on hybrid pilot projects
  • Showcase ATN/PRT’s scalability in master plans for mixed-use developments

The market will ultimately converge on solutions that balance efficiency, flexibility, and ROI. By championing progress across the sector, we ensure ATN/PRT emerges as the defining standard for 21st-century urban mobility.
