  • Dr. Laura Engel, Professor of International Education and International Affairs at George Washington University, who will share about the importance of global experiences for teachers as a primary way of building global competence education in U.S. schools.

 

  • 2024 American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Teacher of the Year Alicia Dallman Shoemaker, who will share about her experiences as a Fulbright scholar and implementing international project-based learning with students traveling abroad.


  • Principal Nichole Tilley, who will share about her school’s partnership with an organization that helps hire teachers from other countries and the beneficial impact this has on teaching and learning.

International Education Week Event: Perspectives on the Future of International Education

On Tuesday, November 19, join ED for coffee and pastries (offered for in-person attendees) followed by a moderated panel discussion (offered virtually or in person) exploring current topics and emerging trends in international education. Panelists will share their perspectives spanning many areas of international education including study abroad, foreign language learning, research, government-funded programs, and beyond. Registration is required and will close for both in-person and online participation at 12 PM ET on Wednesday, November 13.


Doors open at 8:30 AM with the program starting at 9:15 AM. After the panel concludes, there will be a short Q&A session. The program will end at 11 AM. If you have questions, please email Amy.Marrion@ed.gov

Fiscal Year 2025 Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program

ED’s International and Foreign Language Education Office is excited to announce the launch of the Fiscal Year 2025 Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad competition. The Seminars Abroad program provides short-term study abroad opportunities for groups of U.S. educators in the arts, social sciences, and humanities to enhance their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. 


Successful applicants will have their in-country expenses covered, including air transport, meals, and accommodation. Make sure that you are applying to the appropriate seminar based on the educational level at which you work (elementary, secondary, postsecondary). Applications will be accepted through January 7, 2025.

Personnel Development To Improve Services and Results for Children With Disabilities-Preparation of Special Education, Early Intervention, and Related Services Leadership Personnel


  • This priority aims to support doctoral programs that prepare and increase the number of qualified personnel for leadership roles as researchers, educators, or administrators in special education, early intervention, and related services. It focuses on developing multilingual and racially/ethnically diverse leadership at the doctoral level.

Building a Diverse Educator Workforce: Strategies and Lessons Learned from the Regional Educational Laboratory Program

Webinar

Join Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Central and experts from RELs across the country to discuss efforts and evidence-based strategies to promote teacher workforce diversity at four different stages of the teacher pipeline. Each of the speakers will share about a project that enhances teacher diversity within a particular stage in the teacher pipeline.


Participants will learn about ongoing REL efforts across the nation focused on improving teacher workforce diversity and will gain a deeper understanding of strategies for diversifying the teacher workforce within each stage of the teacher pipeline.

Newly Arrived English Learners a Positive for Existing ELs

This article summarizes the results of a study examining the impact that EL enrollment has on other students in academic settings. The results indicate that the arrival of new ELs has a positive impact on academic performance of current and former ELs and has no adverse effects on the performance of non-EL students.

New Law Moves Toward Better Translation of Special Ed Documents, but Families Want More

California recently passed a bill that requires a template for individualized education program (IEP) documents to be translated into the 10 most commonly spoken languages in California. The translated templates must become available by January 1, 2027. Currently, some parents report that IEP documents for their children take up to 6 months to be translated into their home languages.

NEW RESOURCE: The State of the American Student: Fall 2024

COVID-19 disproportionately affected students with unique learning needs. ELs, students with disabilities, and homeless youth had higher rates of absenteeism, disrupted services, and setbacks. This report highlights challenges experienced by special student populations and calls on schools, policymakers, advocates, and philanthropists to enact systemic reforms that would benefit all students.

NEW RESOURCE: What Do Dual Enrollment Students Want? Elevating the Voices of Historically Underserved Students to Guide Reforms

This report investigates the experiences with dual enrollment courses of underserved student groups such as low-income, American Indian, Black, Pacific Islander, and multiracial students. While dual enrollment courses have been proven to be beneficial in many aspects (e.g., increasing the likelihood of attending college), underserved student populations still do not have equitable access to them for a variety of reasons.

NEW RESOURCE: How a Federal Grant Program Is Training and Supporting Educators of English Learners

The National Professional Development (NPD) program has been awarding grants for EL-focused educator professional development projects since 2002. This ED-funded program allows grantees to serve the varied types of educators who work with ELs, including those preparing to join the educator workforce. This study examines the extent to which NPD grantees implemented their projects in ways aligned with these program objectives, drawing primarily on a 2021 survey of all 2016 and 2017 NPD grantees.

Blog: National Scan of Screening Policies and Practices for Identifying English Learners in Pre-K

New America and the American Institutes for Research are collaborating on a project to examine how States are approaching the issue of screening and identifying young children for EL status in State-funded pre-K programs. This first blog post highlights findings from a 50-State scan of policies and guidance for identifying ELs in State pre-K programs. The blog describes the variation in policies, assessment tools that are used by States, and considerations for determining if and how identification could be used in pre-K.
