Celebrating Issue 100
Kia ora!

Ngā mihi o te tau hou Pākehā. I would like to begin by thanking everyone for the warm welcome I have received as I have stepped into the role of Kaiwhakahaere with the NZFVC. It is a great privilege to have the opportunity to contribute to the critical work of the Clearinghouse.

As the NZFVC team has been preparing this Pānui – our first for 2021 and our 100th issue! – we have also become aware of a new outbreak of COVID-19 within the community. As Tāmaki Makaurau is placed under Alert Level 3, and the rest of Aotearoa placed under Alert Level 2, this is a timely reminder that COVID-19 is likely to continue to disrupt our lives for some time to come. The Clearinghouse has a wealth of COVID-19 information related to family, whānau and sexual violence on our website and we are working to ensure that this information remains up to date as we deal with this latest outbreak.

This month’s Pānui contains information about important new research undertaken by NZFVC Director Janet Fanslow and colleagues on sexual abuse trends in Aotearoa. There are also stories highlighting new research and reports on elder abuse, the Christchurch terrorist attack and violence affecting LGBTTQIA+ communities.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou,
Charlotte and the NZFVC team
Featured research
New research explores the history of sexual abuse trends in New Zealand
A century of sexual abuse of women in New Zealand has been analysed in a University of Auckland study.

The research used data from a 2003 New Zealand Violence Against Women study of 2,855 women in Auckland and the Waikato and a 2019 New Zealand Family Violence study that included 1464 women in Auckland, Northland and the Waikato. The women were asked questions about their experiences of sexual abuse.
