Dr. Jennifer Rycroft has accepted another term as Regional Education Lead - Family Medicine

We are happy to announce that Dr. Jennifer Rycroft has extended for a second term as the Regional Education lead - Family Medicine. Dr. Rycroft continues bring her teaching experience and enthusiasm for family medicine to her role.

Dr. Alex Freytag renewed for second term as Regional Education Lead - Anesthesia

We are thrilled that Dr. Alex Freytag has chosen to renew his appointment as the Regional Education Lead - Anesthesia for a second term.

In his role as Regional Education Lead, Dr. Freytag has shown exemplary leadership in developing and coordinator clinical teaching opportunities in Anesthesia for both UG and PG learners at the affiliated teaching hospital. 

Thank you Dr. Freytag for your willingness to renew and congratulations!

Dr. Gavin Mazzetti renewed for second term as PG Internal Medicine Liaison

We are excited to announce that Dr. Gavin Mazzetti has been renewed for a second term as the PG Internal Medicine Liaison effective September 1, 2022.

Dr. Mazzetti has advanced Internal Medicine in the Niagara Region by developing clinical and academic exposures and opportunities by overseeing the education experience of postgraduate residents and coordinating the placements of residents within the Niagara Region.

Mac-CARE Excellence in Teaching Award

The McMaster Community and Rural Education (Mac-CARE) Program of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine has worked with community preceptors to facilitate clinical rotations for McMaster medical students since 2006.

This award is presented to the preceptor who demonstrates excellence in teaching, enthusiasm and motivation to his/her students and embodies the life-long, self-directed learning model of the McMaster medical school. 

Congratulations Dr. Melanie Sénéchal on this much deserved award and helping to shape the Niagara Regional Campus into what it is today.

UGME Leadership Opportunities

CHAIR, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

The MD program is seeking a faculty educator to serve as Chair of Leadership. The Chair will oversee organization, planning, implementation, assessment and evaluation of leadership development for student and faculty leaders in McMaster's distributed UGME program. The Chair will collaborate with the Program for Faculty Development and Faculty Development Coordinators in the regional campus.

CHAIR, CLINICAL SKILLS

The MD program is seeking a faculty educator to serve as Chair of Clinical Skills. The Chair is responsible for overseeing the planning and delivery of the Clinical Skills Program within the distributed medical education network of McMaster's MD Program. Demonstrated excellence as a clinician and educator is desirable. The ideal candidate will be committed to the program's mission of educating and inspiring future physicians to improve health and well-being of all, advance the priorities and principles of the MD program, including the use of student-engaged learning methods, evidence-informed curriculum practices, and orient towards quality improvement.

Calling all Niagara Regional Campus  Medicine Selective faculty

Feedback from previous leads of the selective program indicated concerns with increased work load in the practice of subspecialists when working with medical trainees. Issues identified include delivering quality education and practical experience to the student without compromising quality of care to patients.

Accredited for 2.25 MOC Section 1 Mainpro+ credits, Teaching on the Fly - Time Efficient Teaching Strategy will increase your awareness of tools and strategies to help increase your efficacy and effectiveness in teaching while working. Our aim will be to provide guidance while mentoring students and decrease anxiety.

Overall Learning Objectives

• Learn about subspecialty selectives available at Niagara Regional Campus and the available resources
• Identify barriers to effective and quality outpatient education experience for medical trainees

How many NRC Faculty are supervising project learners?

As of this month, a total of thirty-five faculty members from Niagara, Hamilton and Toronto supervised 46 NRC undergraduate students. Thirty-three supervisors are physicians, and two are epidemiologists.

We thank these twenty-two Niagara-based supervisors for working with NRC learners involved in projects: Drs. Mahmood Albahhar, Kaileigh Alkenberck, Sriharsha Athreya, Liam Beedling, Ian Brown, Omar Bengezi (community physician), Chris Blewett, Katrin Conen, Adnan Hameed, Ekta Khemani, Catherine Krasnik, Blair Leonard, Faraz Masood, Jason Ramsay, Mo Refaei, Rob Sean, John Song, Stephenson Strobel, Karl Stobbe, Michael Tsang, Larry Chambers (epidemiologist), Nathan How (surgery resident). 

We are also indebted to the following nine Hamilton-based Doctors for supervising NRC students: Anita Acai (Psychiatry), Ellen Amster (HEI), Rohan D’Souza (Ob/ Gyn), Paul James (Anesthesiology), Karen McAssey (Pediatrics), James MacKillop (Psychiatry-addiction), Sandra Moneiro (Psychology/ educational science, MERIT), Connie William (Pediatrics), Ramona Nefero (Physical Medicine resident).

It is an honor to have Dr. Will Pickett (epidemiologist at the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences) from Brock University and Toronto-based Drs. Susan Marzolini (Rehab Science) and Christina Reppas-Rindlisbacher (Gerontology) who supervise NRC learner projects.

The McMaster CPD Office is now accepting applications for the Fall 2022 McMaster Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Training Series (MacQIPS) Foundational Certificate.

How are patient order and shift timing associate with imaging choices in the Emergency Department? Evidence from Niagara Health Administrative Data 

Stephenson Strobel (Emergency Medicine), Sabreena Mossa, and Karyssa Hamann assessed whether the timing and order of patients over emergency shifts are associated with receiving diagnostic imaging in the emergency department and characterized whether changes in imagining are associated with changes in patients returning in the ED. Sexual Violence Victimisation

Unnati Patel, Hira Aslam (C2024), Madison Edge Almond submitted a piece for the encyclopedia in May 2022. Sexual violence victimisation in a pressing concern across public and private sectors, and is an important conversation in both the political and legal spheres given evidence of poor biopsychosocial outcomes.
