The Niagara Regional Campus is committed to the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigenous reconciliation and social justice in all that we do.
To further deepen our understanding of these topics we also have purchased some focused reading in these areas that will be available for borrow from the NRC library and will focus on one of these books each month. This month the focus is on 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act: Helping Canadians Make Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples a Reality by Bob Joseph. This essential guide to understanding the Indian Act and its repercussions on generations of Indigenous Peoples examines how Indigenous Peoples can return to self-government, self-determination and self-reliance and why doing so would result in a better country for all Canadians.
Niagara Health continues on its journey towards improving the quality and safety of care for Indigenous patients. The Indigenous Health Services and Reconciliation Team is working to address systemic barriers and bias that can lead to negative Indigenous patient experiences and engaging with the community about how best to support and care for Indigenous Peoples. The implementation of this team is an important milestone in the ongoing efforts to make NH a more culturally sensitive and inclusive organization.

Professional Development Opportunities | |

Anti-Black Racism and Critical Race Education Certificate is a 10-week asynchronous program, and includes three virtual tutorials with the Author/Instructor of the program, Dr. Paul Banahene Adjei throughout the 10 weeks.
The training modules pay attention to historical, sociological, and ideological dynamics that produce and sustain issues of race, racism, and Whiteness. Participants will gain training and information that is grounded in the knowledge of race, racism, anti-black racism, colonialism, Indigeneity, critical whiteness, unconscious biases, and the importance of such knowledge in broader social relations as well as to specialized field of practices such as mental health, counselling, and organizational relations.

The Department of Family Medicine welcomes Niagara Regional Campus' very own, Dr. Amanda Bell as a part-time clinical professor as of May 2023.
Dr. Bell has shown a commitment to excellence in medical education and clinical practice. In 2017, Dr. Bell began her role as the Regional Assistant Dean. Since 2008, Dr. Bell has shown a commitment to medical education in various leadership roles and has proven herself to be a leader.
Congratulations Dr. Bell, thank you for setting an example to the regional campuses that promotion is possible!

It is with pleasure that we announce the appointment of Dr. Anjali Kundi as DFM Site Director for the Niagara Site.
Dr. Kundi has been involved in leadership and teaching in McMaster’s Niagara Regional Campus for 10 years. Recent leadership and education roles include Director of Faculty Development (Niagara Regional Campus), Assistant Pre-Clerkship Director, Student Advisor, and family medicine preceptor to medical students and residents.
Dr. Kundi takes pride in making connections and building relationships that foster community and shares a deep commitment to McMaster’s mission to serve traditionally marginalized populations. A listener, supporter, and leader, she values sharing her experiences and skills with learners. Anjali is committed to supporting residency training and healthcare in the Niagara region in which she works and lives.
The Niagara Regional Campus would like to thank Dr. Karl Stobbe for 6 years of leadership in this role and we acknowledge the significant role Dr. Stobbe played in shaping and strengthening the family medicine training in Niagara.

Please join the Niagara Regional Campus in welcoming Dr. Nagham El-Houssein as Coordinator, Faculty Development. Dr. El-Houssein will commence her role on July 4, 2023.
Dr. El-Houssein is a family physician at the Grimsby Family Medical Centre. Completing her medical degree at NRC and returned for her family medicine residency, rural stream at the Grimsby site.
The Niagara Regional Campus would like to thank Dr. Anjali Kundi for her great enthusiasm and commitment to the role over the last 6 years.

President's Award for Community Engaged Research | |

Congratulations to Niagara Homelessness Emergency Liaison and Peer Support (Niagara HELPS) program for being selected as the 2023 recipient of the President's Award for Community Engaged Research (PACER).
This award is intended to recognize teams of campus and community representatives who have demonstrated a commitment to initiating and supporting excellence in community-campus research initiatives.
Niagara HELPS has been operational since late 2019. HELPS began as a prospective trial of peer support navigators with lived experience of homelessness providing services to patients experiencing homelessness in the St. Catharines and Niagara Falls, Niagara Health Emergency Departments. HELPS has served over 1112 people in Niagara emergency departments, and the partnership trained and employs six peer support navigators with experience of homelessness who are an asset in local emergency departments.
