Nicky Cumberland ’16 Remembered by His Tau Brothers
Dear Kappa Sigma Family,
The loss of our beloved brother, Nicky Cumberland, has left a tremendous void in our lives and a profound ache in our hearts. We are so thankful for all of the love and support that alumni and parents have shown us during these difficult times, and for the prayers from so many people who were touched by Nicky.
As a band of brothers, we have come together and have been encouraged to “Love Like Nicky.” This phrase is something that encompasses one of the countless amazing qualities that Nicky possessed, which is why you will see many of us wearing a red bracelet with this daily reminder to continue that legacy. We want the Cumberlands to know and never forget how much our dear Nicky meant to us, and how thankful we are to them for allowing Nicky to bless our lives and show us what it means to truly live. We also want them to know that the hundreds of Nicky’s brothers send our love to them, and are here for them if they ever need anything.
The night of his passing, we held a celebration of Nicky’s life at the house, where hundreds gathered to share stories of his beautiful personality. His impact on this fraternity and on this campus was so great, which is apparent in the overwhelming turnout we saw at the celebration.

During this time, we will be grieving in different ways; however, we ask for one common comfort through this and that is – to love people well. In John 15:12, Jesus tells us, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” Nicky embodied this commandment and it is only fitting for us to do the same.
For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a
building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
(2 Corinthians 5:1)
With love,
