SCC Book Inn & Nike Join Forces

We are thrilled to share some exciting news!

Spartanburg Community College's bookstore, the SCC Book Inn, has teamed up with none other than Nike, the iconic sportswear brand, to bring a fresh and stylish collection of apparel right here to our campus!

This collaboration is a significant milestone for SCC as we continue to prioritize offering the best for our college community. With Nike's unparalleled reputation for quality and trendsetting designs, this partnership will undoubtedly elevate your style both on and off campus.

The Book Inn is also excited to report it will now be offering faculty and staff a 25% off discount on personal purchases (excluding textbooks, course materials, electronics, and clearance).

All-College Meeting

Set your calendars! We will have an All-College Meeting at 10:30 AM on September 8th in the auditorium of the Downtown Campus.

At the conclusion of the meeting, lunch will be served in the gym.

All campuses will be closed so all SCC faculty and staff can attend.

Woah, that new SCC Website is Snazzy!

After more than two years of planning and working, we are proud to announce that the Spartanburg Community College website redesign is complete!

Check it out here: www.sccsc.edu

Please note that the transition to this new page will take some getting used to, especially given that the website is now almost solely focused on introducing the College to new, prospective students. Accordingly, all information that is primarily used for internal audiences will now be housed on the SCC Portal rather than on the website.

This means that we have removed the capability for faculty and staff to make unilateral changes to content on the public-facing website. Changes related to content accuracy and date changes will be made through a ticketing process which will be explained further down.

As we navigate through the rollout of the new website, your insights and feedback are very important to ensuring we have the best, most up-to-date information presented to prospective students and other external stakeholders who may visit our website. This means checking the website for accuracy and the inclusion of all necessary information for POTENTIAL students.

A ticketing system will be utilized for needed edits/suggestions for the website. Only edits or suggestions submitted through this system will be addressed to ensure they are tracked and to keep the website management team from being inundated with requests, comments, and other communications regarding changes.

Click here to submit a ticket or visit the Marketing Sharepoint Page to access the ticketing system.

Submissions submitted via email will not be addressed. Also, please know that we are not guaranteeing that all changes will be implemented -- we will evaluate edits/additions on a case by case basis.

Starting 9/1/23, we will not be accepting content changes to the website (exceptions to this include financial aid and admissions).

SCC Food Pantry Back to School Restock

Student Life is gearing up to welcome students back to campus and one of the ways to do that is by ensuring our food pantry is completely stocked!

We are doing a Back to School Restock starting TODAY Monday, July 31st – August 11th and would love if you would join us. Our most needed items are:

  • Personal hygiene products
  • Canned goods
  • Laundry detergent and cleaning products
  • Quick cook foods (microwave meals, ramen noodles, etc.)
  • Diapers of all sizes

If you would prefer to give a monetary donation, please visit the Foundations link HERE and specify that it is for the Food Pantry

We will be collecting items in the Food Pantry during their hours of operation (Monday-Thursday 9AM-2PM), or in JAP C-109 outside of their operating hours.

The pantry is also available for any SCC Faculty or Staff member who is in need of assistance, and we ensure complete anonymity.

Thank you for serving our students and please let me know if you have any questions!

D2L Updates and Training

Faculty and staff may have noticed the updates to the D2L Brightspace Quizzes and Discussion tools. This new experience is designed for easy activity creation and editing, to work better for various devices including iPads and other touchscreen devices, and to make the D2L experience more consistent across the available tools. While we are confident that faculty and staff will be able to adapt swiftly, check out the below videos for an overview of the new experience. There is no change to the student’s point-of-view at this time.

New Quiz Experience

New Discussion Experience

SCCOnline will offer live training for D2L Brightspace and Honorlock in August. Workshops will be held in the Library Instruction Room (LIB-127) and will also be live streamed over Teams. Besides being used as our platform for online and hybrid courses, D2L Brightspace is used in all courses at SCC to track and submit student grades. On-campus instructors may use any of the tools in D2L to share materials with students, collect assignments, or provide practice activities.

D2L Basics Part 1 (Thursday, August 3 from 1:30-3:30pm) -- Register

Learn how to set up your D2L course, communicate with students, add online content, facilitate discussions, manage your online gradebook, and submit never attends and final grades.

D2L Basics Part 2 (Wednesday, August 9 from 1:30-3:30pm) -- Register

Learn how to create and manage online assignments and tests.

Honorlock (Thursday, August 10 from 10:00-11:00am) -Register

Honorlock staff will show participants how to set up and configure tests for online proctoring in both D2L and third-party testing systems. They will also demonstrate how to review and interpret proctoring results.

Fully online versions of these workshops (and more) may be found under the Discover tab in D2L Brightspace. These are self-paced and can be started at any time. Help is available throughout D2L Brightspace by clicking on the Help menu.

If you or your students have questions about D2L Brightspace or Honorlock, please email SCCOnline at [email protected] or call 864-592-4961/888-364-9080 (toll-free).

Jenny Whitaker: Campus Administrator of Tyger River Campus

A big congratulations is in order for Jenny Whitaker for her promotion to Campus Administrator at the Tyger River Campus!

In this new role, Jenny will be handling a portion of her old duties as Admin. Specialist, certain functions of the Program Asst. position and Operations Manager.

The Campus Administrator supervises all administrative and program staff in Corporate & Community Education (CCE) and the Tyger River Campus (TRC) administrative staff (Portia, Lisa & Kristen)and will work closely with the VP of Economic Advancement, CCE, and Academic staff to ensure excellent customer service for internal and external customers housed at TRC Campus (Credit and Non-Credit portions of Campus).

In addition, Jenny will be responsible for CCE grants, Ed2Go, sponsorship and contracting billing, as well as tracking of all scholarship funds.

She coordinates and manages scheduling of Academic and CCE classes at TRC and provides services to students and the public as well as communicates as need with appropriate TRC and central campus personnel and all affected parties.

Jenny has been performing many of these duties on an interim basis and we are glad to see her move into this role permanently as we work to enhance our Tyger River Campus.

Pam Sargent will continue to serve as Enterprise Director of the Spark SC, which also includes oversight of all custodial staff and primary contact on facility issues.

Congratulations, Jenny!

Update on Textbook Ordering

As was communicated in an email on July 17th to Faculty and Staff, the SCC Book Inn is shifting its approach to how students obtain textbooks this Fall.

Textbooks will not be in the bookstore on shelves for purchase, they will have to be purchased online. We are aware that some students may have difficulty ordering online or have a spotty internet connection where they live in more rural areas. To help with this, we will set up ordering stations at the Giles Campus Bookstore to assist with ordering.

Where to order? https://bookstore.sccsc.edu

When to begin ordering? Beginning August 1 for the Fall Term, which coincides with Financial Aid opening up for bookstore purchases.

How to order? See the document linked here.

In the attachment you will find step by step instructions detailing how to order using the bookstore’s website. Students can choose to have items shipped to an off-campus location for a flat rate of $10 or choose In Store Pickup at the Giles, Cherokee, Tyger River, or Union Campus for free.

Due to the bookstore being located at the Giles Campus, In Store Pickup orders at Giles will be ready for pickup generally within 24-48 hours of the student receiving their 2nd email of their PDF receipt.

If an item is being shipped to the Cherokee or Tyger River Campus, this may add an extra day to make it to these campuses.

If an item is being shipped to the Union Campus, students should know that Shipping and Receiving currently only delivers once a week, on Wednesday, to that campus, so students should factor that in if the Union Campus is chosen as a pickup location.

**Students using the Sherry Vaughn Emergency Textbook Fund or the Fill the Backpack Fund will need to contact the bookstore so we can pull their materials ahead of time at [email protected] **

Spartanburg Panera Donations to SCC Food Pantry

A tremendous thank you is in order for the staff of the Panera on Blackstock Road in Spartanburg! On Thursdays, bread items not sold by the end of the day are donated to the SCC Food Pantry, where they are available Monday morning until the Pantry closes Wednesday.

Panera staff are pictured below.

New Fall hours for Panera are Monday-Thursday from 9AM until 2PM. If assistance is needed outside of scheduled hours, please contact Pantry management at [email protected] or call (864) 592-4060 to set up an appointment.

SC Green Donates $3,000 for Horticulture Scholarships

SC Green is a statewide, non-profit organization whose goal is to serve its membership by increasing the professionalism of the green industry through ongoing educational opportunities, trade shows, and scholarships to students planning a career in the horticulture and landscape industries.

This year, SC Green proudly donated $3,000 to the SCC Horticulture Program for scholarship funding, an increase of $500 over last year's contribution.

This contribution and its increase speaks volumes to the impact of our amazing horticulture program!

SCC Foundation Launches Alumni Council

As part of our revitalized commitment to connect our alumni and provide career-long value to all Chasers the Spartanburg Community College Alumni Association is proud to announce the establishment of the Alumni Council.

The group gathered recently on the Giles Campus and was treated to an amazing meal prepared by Chef Shaun Bezuidenhout and the summer semester's culinary students. The meal allowed us to highlight one of the many talented groups Chasing their dreams here at SCC while giving the council members a chance to begin discussing plans for the upcoming year.

Pictured above with Chef Bezuidenhout are Tammy McGinnis ('14), Molly McKinney-Administrative Assistant for SCC Foundation/Alumni Outreach ('17), Ed and Ysante McDowell ('21), Dr. Lichelle Jones-Wilkins ('02), Ryan Collins ('17), Kristin Perez ('23), and Brandon Coates ('11). Not pictured: Marcus Smith ('21), Jodi Snyder ('20), Lekesa Whitner ('00) , James Thomas ('00), and Aston Trice ('23).

SCC Foundation Celebrates the Completion of the 2023 Fiscal Year

As the fiscal year winds to a close we wanted to take a moment to reflect on this year's accomplishments and express our gratitude for all that the Spartanburg Community College Foundation has been able to accomplish with the help of our supporters.

  • New Fund Established in Memory of Rick Teal: $13,000 raised
  • First Golf Tournament (Chaser's Cup): $87,974.56 raised in unrestricted funds
  • Employee Campaign (OneSCC): $45,010.94 raised college-wide

These funds allowed us to assist 38 students in purchasing books and supplies which are costs not included in Free Tuition and can often add up to thousands of dollars. They allowed us to assist 27 students with unforeseen emergencies over the course of the year, and allowed us to award $61,000 in scholarships!

We also were able to support our fellow faculty and staff to continue curriculum development, training, and program expansion using funds allocated toward institutional support.

We could not do any of these things without you. Thank you for investing in our community as we continue to Dream it, Chase it, Live it!
