In addition to these five individuals, four juveniles are also charged in connection with auto break-ins and thefts, the Tift County Sheriff's Office says.

SHERIFF'S OFFICE CHARGES NINE IN AUTO BREAK-INS, THEFTS
Nine individuals, four of them juveniles , face a total of 29 charges involving auto break-ins and thefts , the Tift County Sheriff's Office says.

The suspects range in age between 15 and 20 years old.

During the past eight weeks, the Sheriff’s Office has noticed a sharp rise in reports related to entering autos and motor vehicle thefts . Since then, sheriff’s deputies and Investigators have been working to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Adult suspects and their respective charges are:

  • Tyrone Washington, 17, one count entering auto (felony), one count theft by taking (felony);
  • Mekiau Griffin, 17, four counts entering auto (felony), two counts theft by taking (felony), two counts theft by receiving (felony), one count criminal attempt to commit entering auto (felony);
  • Patriana Daniels, 17, two counts entering auto (felony), one count criminal attempt to commit entering auto (felony), one count theft by receiving (felony), one count theft by taking (felony), one count loitering (misdemeanor);
  • Shymek Brown, 20, one count entering auto (felony), one count theft by receiving (felony), one count loitering (misdemeanor), one count contributing to the delinquency of a minor (misdemeanor);
  • Luke Ferro, 17, one count entering auto (party to a crime) (felony), one count theft by taking (felony).
TOUR de TIFTON BIKE RIDE
RETURNS FOR 10th YEAR
The  Tiftarea YMCA's 10th Annual Tour de Tifton/Ilse Boyette Memorial Charity Bike Ride  is set for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 13

The ride begins and ends at the  TIftarea YMCA Hunt Park  on 1823 Westover Road. There will be a beginner's  11-mile  course, intermediate level  25- and 45-mile , and  62- and 100-mile  century routes for advanced riders.
 
All individual pre-registered participants, by April 6 , will receive a  T-shirt . Participants completing either of the century courses will receive a special gift. Lunch will be provided.
 
Proceeds benefit  Tiftarea YMCA programs  and  scholarships  for  underprivileged youth , and the  book fund  for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College nursing students  in memory of  Ilse Boyette .

SPECIAL OLYMPICS BRINGS OUT
RECORD NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS
A record number of participants came out on a chilly Friday morning for Tift County's 40th annual Special Olympics.

More than 260 special needs young people and approximately 250 volunteers from local organizations and the Tift County school system gathered at the E.B. Hamilton Complex for fun and games.

Each athlete was given a new pair of tennis shoes , a T-shirt , a medal and a trophy .

All shoes given to participants were donated through funds from the community .

KIWANIS PLANS 'CHICKEN-QUE'
Members of the  Kiwanis Club of Tifton are selling tickets for their annual  Chicken-Que  on  Saturday, April 6 .

Plates may be picked up at the First United Methodist Church Social Hall at 107 12th St. from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on April 6. Tickets are $8 each and include a half chicken, cole slaw, beans and dessert.

Tickets may be purchased through  Thursday, March 28  by contacting any Kiwanis Club member. For information, call  229-382-4560 .
EXCHANGE CLUB SEEKS NOMINEES
FOR GOLDEN DEEDS AWARD
The Exchange Club of Tifton is seeking nominees for the 66th annual awarding of the Book of Golden Deeds .

The longest running project of the Exchange Club of Tifton and the National Exchange Club recognizes volunteers who making their communities better places to live.

“This is quite a big honor for a Tiftonite ,” said Regenia Wells , program co-chair. “They will join an elite group of individuals that have helped to make Tifton what it is today.” 

A nomination letter or letters should include detailed information about how the nominated individual is helping local people and programs. The nominee should be sincere about helping the community and has an exceptional track record of continued, unselfish giving.

The nomination deadline is April 12 . Letters should be mailed to the Exchange Club of Tifton, P. O. Box 1621, Tifton, GA 31793 or emailed to spearmanagency@friendlycity.net with the subject "Exchange Club Golden Deeds."
YOUNG PIZZA CHEFS ... Sherri Coarsey's and Caitlyn McFarland's first-grade classes at Annie Belle Clark Elementary recently became temporary pizza parlors . Students ordered shaped pizzas from their classmates. They had to decide what they wanted on their whole pizza, on half of their pizza, and on one fourth of their pizza. Then they became producers by making real pizzas . ... NEW TIFTON REP: Bo Mathis  joins Americot as a sales representative in the Southeast region, following seven years in sales for PhytoGen . A graduate of the University of Georgia , he will be based in Tifton . Americot is a national leader in cotton seed production and technologies .
