Nine Protective Factors of Resilience
By Zelda Burger, MA and Dr. Peggy Marshall
“Although the world is full of suffering, it is also full of the overcoming of it.”
–Helen Keller
Our worlds have changed dramatically over the past 12 months requiring more attention to the factors that impact clients positively in becoming more resilient. At no other time in our history have we experienced the coming together of three global crises that impact health, financial well-being, and social justice issues. We could also add climate change as a factor impacting the crises as well. With that said, it’s important for coaches to help clients identify and integrate protective factors that can help them build and enhance resilience.
Many authors have contributed to resilience research and have identified what are considered to be the protective factors. We have distilled the protective factors that lead to enhanced effectiveness in dealing with adversity down to nine factors by combining and connecting the most researched. The nine protective factors are:
1) Social/Family Connections/Collaboration
2) Meaningfulness/Purpose
3) Grit/Endurance
4) Positive Perspectives in Life/Happiness
5) Previous Experience with Hardship/Adversity
6) Subjective Well-being/Self Care
7) Independence/Self-Determination
8) Self-acceptance/Authenticity
9) Post-traumatic Growth/Learning from Adversity
