Dear People of Ascension,
Here is one of my favorite poems for St. Francis Day. In all my years of Animal Blessings, I have never been presented with a pig. But I love the idea that part of what we do in blessing is “reteach a thing is loveliness,” and the poet’s tenderness in describing in detail “the long, perfect loveliness of sow.”
So may we see, and bless, the beauty of all God’s creatures, including ourselves!

Saint Francis and the Sow
The bud
stands for all things,
even for those things that don’t flower,
for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;
though sometimes it is necessary
to reteach a thing its loveliness,
to put a hand on its brow
of the flower
and retell it in words and in touch
it is lovely
until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;
as Saint Francis
put his hand on the creased forehead
of the sow, and told her in words and in touch
blessings of earth on the sow, and the sow
began remembering all down her thick length,
from the earthen snout all the way
through the fodder and slops to the spiritual curl of the tail,
from the hard spininess spiked out from the spine
down through the great broken heart
to the sheer blue milken dreaminess spurting and shuddering
from the fourteen teats into the fourteen mouths sucking and
blowing beneath them:
the long, perfect loveliness of sow.

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion
If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.
In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.

Ascension Forum Series: Being Human in the Age of AI, Oct. 11, 25, & Nov 8. Artificial intelligence (AI) is dominating headlines. Leaders of the major AI labs are promising a near-utopian future, and then warning (often in the same document) that AI could be an existential threat to humanity. Clarity is in short supply and confusion seems to be abundant. Join for this three-part series, where we will engage in conversations about how AI works, the societal issues it raises, and how people of faith can respond. These conversations will be led by Clay Williams. Clay has a PhD in computer science and an MA in theology. His doctoral work used AI in computational models of the immune system. Clay brings these interests together to offer insights into how AI works, contrast AI with human thinking, and help spiritual communities reflect theologically on the place of AI in our world.

The Transitus of St. Francis. From the earliest days of the Franciscan Order, the followers of St. Francis have gathered on the anniversary of his death, October 3rd, to celebrate his transitus, that is, St. Francis’ passage from earthly life into everlasting life. This year marks the 800th anniversary of his death and we will be celebrating this most holy observance at St. Mary the Virgin (145 W 46th St.) at 6:00 p.m.
“Praised be You, my Lord, through our Sister Bodily Death, from whom no living man can escape.” Canticle of Creation, St. Francis

Immigration Legal Support Fund – Recently our diocese announced a new Immigration Legal Support Fund to support immigrant families in our congregations and neighborhoods throughout the Diocese of New York. The Legal Fund will help those navigating immigration under urgent and vulnerable circumstances to access legal resources. We're starting with a $50,000 contribution from the Bishop’s discretionary funds. Help us to match this amount to keep families together. With your support, we can do more so that no one faces the system alone. Your contribution makes possible same-day response, family preparedness, limited-scope appearances, and urgent filings. You can contribute here. To learn more about the Immigration Legal Support Fund Click here.
