Averitt Associates Combine to give 10,000+ hours of Community Service

Averitt Express associates combined to give more than 10,000 hours of community service over the course of 2022 as part of its Team Up Community Challenge. Overall, they served 10,433 hours, with 95 facilities across Averitt’s system helping 223 organizations through efforts including clothing, food and toy drives, disaster relief, litter cleanups and blood donations.

In recognition of those hours, as well as associate milestones and accomplishments, Averitt also made a matching contribution of $750,000 to Averitt Cares for Kids, the company’s employee-giving program.

“The Team Up Community Challenge is an important tradition for our team, and I’m very proud of how our associates stepped up to make a difference in our communities during 2022,” said Gary Sasser, Averitt’s chairman and chief executive officer. “I’m proud of the commitment our associates have to serving in our communities, and I’m even more excited about the potential we have to make a difference throughout our network in the future.”

The Team Up Community Challenge is a year-round initiative through which associates at each facility across Averitt’s network are encouraged to participate in various charitable initiatives.

Together, the Team Up Community Challenge and Averitt Cares for Kids make up Averitt Charities. The mission of Averitt Charities is to help those in need through a partnership between associates and the company that gives back to the communities Averitt serves. SAFETY SPOTLIGHT

6 Safety Truck Driving Tips

  1. 3 Points of Contact: Remember to always employ three points of contact when entering or exiting the tractor, trailer, or climbing onto or down from the catwalk. This means always having both hands and one foot or both feet and one hand in contact with your equipment. Making this a habit can prevent slips, trips, and falls!

  1. Avoid Distractions: Keep both hands on the steering wheel in the 9&3 oclock position. This allows the maximum steering wheel movement in either direction without having to reposition your hands, giving you the most leverage and control of your vehicle.

  1. Tractor & Trailer Lights: Keep your headlights and clearance lights on when driving. Also, always make sure to keep your lights clean. Being visible is extremely important to your safety. Driving with lights on will allow a fellow motorist to see your equipment sooner. This will allow other drivers more time to adjust to any potential hazards.

  1. Safe Loading and Unloading Practices: Ensure that vehicles and freight are properly secured when loading or unloading freight. Apply tractor and trailer parking brakes and turn off your tractor. If available, use chock blocks for extra security. Do not pull out of a loading dock until the dock plate has been removed and you have verified that the loading/unloading has in fact been completed and that no equipment or people are still working in the trailer.

  1. Seatbelts: Always wear a properly adjusted seatbelt. In a team driving environment, as a sleeper-berth occupant, use belts and/or netting during operation of the truck. Do not occupy the upper bunk unless the truck is parked. Seatbelts are the most effective vehicle safety device, saving thousands of lives annually.

  1. Speed Limit: To ensure your personal safety and the safety of those around you, travel at or lower than speeds of 62 mph (100 kph) or the otherwise posted speed limit of the roadway being travelled. Always adjust your speed to a safe level as determined by the various driving conditions.

Just a few great safety tips for truck drivers to follow. In addition to safe driving; trailers are very large pieces of equipment and full concentration is necessary from the driver at all times. It is important not only for the drivers be at their best, but also the equipment. Proper maintenance will greatly reduce the chance of breakdowns and keep you trucking.

LEGISLATIVE REPORT

Dale Allen, Adams and Reese, LLP

On Friday, April 21, 2023, the Tennessee General Assembly adjourned its 2023 session, thus concluding one of the more tumultuous sessions in modern history. Legislative highlights included passage of a $3.3 billion infrastructure package that will include the addition of “choice lanes” on Tennessee interstates, and passage of a $56.2 billion budget that includes a three-month sales tax holiday for groceries, as well significant raises for teachers. History will remember the session as being marred by the tragic shooting at The Covenant School in Nashville, resulting in the deaths of three school children and three adults. The tragedy has gripped Nashville ever since, with ripple effects that placed Tennessee at the front of national headlines and could impact Tennessee politics for years to come.

The session had been relatively workmanlike leading up into the March 27 shooting, as Governor Bill Lee was close to passing his infrastructure package, non-finance committees were winding down in advance of the administration's budget amendment being released in early April, and leadership was targeting a May 1 adjournment. The Covenant tragedy immediately stoked calls for greater gun control with thousands of protesters descending upon the Capitol on March 30, calling for greater school safety and gun control measures. The Lee administration and legislative leadership immediately swung into action with an enhanced school safety bill, which passed both chambers overwhelmingly. However, for much of the remainder of session, the protestors packed the House galleries and Capitol common areas on a daily basis demanding that more action be taken to address gun violence.

As emotions intensified, eventually Reps. Justin Jones (D-Nashville), Justin Pearson (D-Memphis), and Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville) were initially stripped of their committee assignments and allegedly had their access to the legislative building and parking facility cut off over the weekend after March 30, 2023. On Monday, House Republicans filed articles of expulsion, seeking to remove the three from the General Assembly.
