"The Amazing Grace of God"
"...the Lord loves the righteous..." (Psalm 146:8b)

Today, November 10, is the anniversary of Martin Luther's birth in Eisleben, Germany (1483). If you can find it, have a piece of German Chocolate cake in his memory!

(This is also Veteran's Day weekend. Thank a veteran when you see them this weekend, and, every day for that matter.)

In the psalm for this Sunday, the 25th Sunday after Pentecost, the above phrase from Psalm 146 caught my eye.

Martin Luther was drawn to the Gospel of Jesus Christ through his studying of the psalms, and, the righteousness of God. Dr. Luther struggled early in his life with the concept of God as a righteous God. He often saw God as a harsh judge. He even admitted to his confessor once that he rather hated God for His harshness - all because Luther could not, as hard as he tried, appease this angry God he had come to know.

It wasn't until the year 1515, when Luther began to study the book of Romans and read 1:17 that told him that "the just shall live by faith" that (as he put it later) "the gates of paradise were opened to him!"

Even Paul would seem to support Luther's earlier opinion in 3:10 when he said, "No one is righteous, not one." But the "Aha moment" for Luther had come. Ah, it's not by my works that I am saved, but it is solely by the pure grace of God.
So - on this birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther, let us celebrate his rediscovery of the Gospel: it is by the work of Christ Jesus (the vision of an empty cross and a vacated tomb) that we are saved; our righteousness only comes from and through Him-He who died-so that we will live!

The Lord loves the righteous-this is true. But, we are not righteous - we sin and fall short of the glory of God (another quote of Paul in Romans). Each time we fall, God is there to pick us up. Confession is good for the soul. It renews and revives us back to the gift of our salvation - preferably the work of Jesus - and we are made righteous again. Not because of something we have done, mind you, but of what God has done through His Son!

This-my brothers and sisters-is the amazing grace of God! It reminds us every day, that...
...God loves you, and so do we!

Gospel Of The Week

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

38 As he taught, Jesus said, "Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces,  39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.   40 They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely."

The Widow's Offering

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put  and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.  42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.  44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything-all she had to live on."

Mark 12:38-44
