"The Cross"
"...but we proclaim Christ crucified..." I Corinthians 1:23a

What DOES the cross mean to us in this day and time?

Is it just ornamentation that hangs from a chain around our necks or from a small hoop earring? Is it simply a cool design on an elaborate T-shirt? Does it simply identify the faith of a certain building as it adorns the highest point of the roof line?
Does the fact that the cross points both upward, downward, and outward have any significance in its meaning for us?

So what, then, is the big deal about the cross of Jesus Christ?
Many thousands died on crosses back in the biblical days. So, what's One more?
The cross - for the Roman government - was used to warn, threaten, and put fear in the populace of what would certainly happen to others if they acted out treasonous acts. It seemed to be a great deterrent to that kind of malicious behavior!

The symbol of the cross may well be one of the most recognized symbols in the world, next to the American flag, the "moon and star" Islamic symbol, McDonalds' arches, Coca Cola insignia, and Kentucky Fried Chicken caricature of Colonel Harland Sanders..

That God would not spare even His only begotten Son to show the depth of His love for the world - to allow Jesus to die on that decadent cross in an excruciatingly humbling death - would be both the most ridiculous and yet most courageous gesture that God could ever do for humanity.

"Christ crucified" points to the most powerful work ever done for the world. In its ultimate humility and degradation, God shows the truest power of all: love. A love that cannot be defeated or replaced; a love that cannot be controlled by any human source, for, it comes completely from God Himself.

The cross. Not just any cross. The Cross of Christ. Oh, you don't have to fully understand why, other than the fact that it is a constant reminder that...
...God loves you and so do we!

Gospel Of The Week

Some Pharisees  came and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
"What did Moses command you?" he replied.
They said, "Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce and send her away."
"It was because your hearts were hard  that Moses wrote you this law,"Jesus replied.  "But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.'[a]   'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,[b]  and the two will become one flesh.'[c]  So they are no longer two, but one flesh.  Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

10 When they were in the house again, the disciples asked Jesus about this.  11 He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her.   12 And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery."

The Little Children and Jesus

13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them.  14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.  15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."   16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.
