Then he said to them, "The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath." (Mark 2:27-28)

"Our God is an awesome God..." we sing in our Heartsong worship on numerous occasions. And, He truly is.  But, scripture points out that He is also "...a jealous God..."

No so much a covetous God as we might think in light of the Ten Commandments, but for me, a God who is "zealous" for our companionship, friendship, and attention along the journey we take together in this life. He desires deeply to be "spiritually intimate" (in the most positive understanding of Schnabel an ides) with each one of us.

This so-called divine jealousy includes a constant form of worship - much of which we can (and should) do every day of our lives-but also gathering regularly in community (see Matthew 18:20).

Gather, not just two, three, or more - that's not what it's about, but most importantly  " My name...".  In this little phrase stands the vital and definitely important experience of corporate worship.

People tell me when they've missed a Sunday worship that he/she/they "...worshipped in God's creation that Sunday...". My response has always been, "That's great. Just don't make a habit of it. We miss you when you're not here."

Revering the Sabbath (Exodus 20:8) is to be taken seriously and kept holy. Personally it's best for me to experience God's holiness when I can gather with other believers, sinful as we may be, and hear God's Word, and experience His Presence (water, wine, bread, Word, fellowship/community...). There - in my sinful nature, I hear God say, "You are My child, and I love you and remember your sin no more." (Hebrews 8:12)

That is the voice of an awesome and jealous  and  zealous God!

I keep the Sabbath because He commanded that we do it. I worship on Sundays and because He calls us to do it. (Luke 4:8).

Remember that God loves you and so do we!

Gospel Of The Week

23 And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
24 And the Pharisees said unto him, Behold, why do they on the sabbath day that which is not lawful?
25 And he said unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him?
26 How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
27 And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand.
And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.
And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.
And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.
And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.
And the Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.

Mark 2:23-3:6
