As I start my 4th year as Mayor I thought it was a good time to look at what I wanted to accomplish, what has been accomplished, and what is left to do.

Jobs and Economic Development
Nixa must continue to  expand its economic base.  This will allow for the revenue to keep up our streets, improve our parks and schools, and create businesses and jobs for Nixa residents, in Nixa.
Over the last 3 years we have made several investments to bring more jobs to Nixa.  Along with the schools and the fire districts, we invested in a company called Retail Strategies to sell Nixa to national retail businesses.  During this same time, we have worked with Ozark, Christian County and many local businesses to form the Christian County Business Development Corporation.  This new entity will allow us to soon hire a full time economic developer who will work to attract and grow businesses throughout the county.

Better Quality of Life for Everyone
Our main priority must continue to be helping the citizens and businesses in Nixa.  We continue to work to improve Nixa's three most important assets - our city infrastructure, police and parks.
Towards these goals, our electric system was recently awarded a platinum-level recognition as a Reliable Public Power Provider (RP3) from the American Public Power Association. We have also improved and expanded our water systems and worked to relieve stormwater and sewer issues across the city.  Several major street projects were completed in 2016, with several more slated for 2017 and beyond.  This year we added 5 additional officers to the force to meet the expanded calls for service.  Our parks department continues to improve the quality and number of offerings.  The City continues to look for new and innovative ideas on how to best service the community, within the available resources.

Connecting Us with Parks and Sidewalks
As a part of helping to keep Nixa one of the best places to live, we have continued to push for new and improved parks and recreational programs throughout Nixa.  The voters have shown, while they support this, the city needs to make these improvements within current tax revenues.  To this end, the City has saved over $1 million into a new parks expansion fund, and will continue to look for ways to save towards a future community park.

We have been much more successful in building the needed sidewalk connections throughout the city.  This includes a crosswalk across 160, connecting east and west Nixa for the first time.  With planned improvements on 14, you will soon be able to travel from one end of town to the other, safely.

Keeping Our Government Accountable
The City must provide the services that Nixa needs, but at a cost tax payers can afford.  Along with this we must strive to be more efficient and effective with what we do have.  Like in business, government should work to be as effective as possible - in the most efficient way possible.  To that end, one of my proudest accomplishments is the initiation of the NCIP - Nixa Continuing Improvement Program.  Modeled after the school district's very successful strategic planning program, NCIP brings community members from every area of Nixa to work together to develop a plan for our future.

Keeping my Commitments to You
I look forward to continuing to work towards these goals over the next 3 years, and I hope I will be able to report even more successes in the future!

Sincerely,
Mayor Steele

Working for you
Nixa declares war on mosquitoes
Starting Tuesday, May 30th, the Nixa Street Department will begin spraying for mosquitoes. Sprayers will drive designated routes Mon-Thur. 7:00 to 9:00pm. The intent is to spray every area once a week. Spraying will be subject to rain and wind conditions. The department tries to spray the city parks more than once a week and we also drop mosquito abatement in ponds and other standing water areas in the city. Please help do your part by limiting the amount of standing water on your property.

You can see which streets will be sprayed by looking at the attached route map.

Water Dept. Assists City of Republic
On May 8th, 2017, the city of Republic had a wastewater station fail causing sewage to leak into Shuyler Creek Bypass.  The city of Nixa wastewater department assisted in the clean up. The Republic City Administrator sent the following thank you letter:

Dear. Mr. Bingle:

On behalf of the City of Republic, I would like to extend our sincere appreciation for the assistance received from the city of Nixa during our recent sewer system problem.  This was a challenge that none of us with to face and we are grateful for your help.  With your assistance, we were able to quickly mitigate a significant environmental concern while auxiliary systems were put in place.

Again, thank you, and if we can ever be of service, please let us know.

Best regards,
David Cameron
City Administrator

Electric Dept. honored for reliable electricity
The Nixa Electric Utility has earned a "Platinum" level Reliable Public Power Provider
(RP3)® designation from the American Public Power Association for providing reliable and safe electric service.

The RP3 designation, which lasts for three years, recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate proficiency in  four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development and system improvement. Criteria include sound
business practices and a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity.

Nixa Electric joins 235  public power utilities nationwide that hold the RP3 designation. Of the 235 RP3 designated utilities, 91 hold the
"Platinum" level designation, which shows a utility is demonstrating an even higher level of proficiency by applying  a high number of industry best practices.

Congratulations Nixa Electric Department!
