Today we introduce our NO BOUNDARIES: The Magic and Wonder of Shorebirds campaign to safeguard these incredible birds - meet our 9 flagship species pictured above!

We See No Boundaries!

At Manomet Conservation Sciences, we see no boundaries in the habitats that shorebirds use to survive. Shorebirds are among the most awe-inspiring travelers on the planet, navigating vast distances across continents with incredible precision. But these amazing birds face growing threats like habitat loss, climate change, and human disturbance.

At Manomet Conservation Sciences, there are no boundaries in our ability to work across the Western Hemisphere to reverse the decline of shorebirds. TODAY, we are launching an ambitious initiative to reverse the decline of 9 flagship shorebird species that are powerful symbols of, endurance, connection, and a healthy planet. They’re a vital part of ecosystems across the Hemisphere, from wetlands in the High Andes to the grasslands of the North American prairies, and reliable indicators of ecosystem health.

There are no boundaries in what we can accomplish together to recover these birds. Protecting shorebirds means safeguarding not only their future but also the health of our planet’s ecosystems. Through this shorebird campaign, we’re rallying support to ensure these remarkable birds continue to inspire wonder for generations to come. Join us in making a difference—because healthy shorebirds mean a healthy planet.

Meet Manomet’s 9 Flagship Species here and join us on the journey to safeguard these amazing birds…

Flying High: Meet the 2024 Upcoming Champions of Neotropical Shorebird Conservation

Meet the next generation of conservationists: nine incredible recipients of Manomet Conservation Sciences’ 2024 Small Grants for Conservation of Neotropical Shorebirds. This program is all about supporting early-career conservationists in Latin America and the Caribbean who are passionate about protecting shorebirds. These grants help fund research and conservation efforts that directly benefit Neotropical shorebird populations, especially in important areas like the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) sites or those with the potential to join the network.

Top 9 Birds at Manomet Observatory in 2024

More than 300 bird species have called Manomet’s headquarters home over the last century. With recorded observations dating back as early as 1941 from the Ernst family — the property’s previous owners before they donated the land to Manomet’s first Executive Director in 1969 — you can imagine how many rare and unusual species have taken birdwatchers by surprise over the years.

In the Field Spotlight

Manomet’s Lisa Schibley, North American Coordinator of the International Shorebird Survey, and Texas Coast Shorebird Biologist Sam Wolfe recently took part in the Texas Ornithological Society’s winter meeting in Beaumont, Texas. As keynote speakers, they shared insights on Manomet’s Whimbrel research and the role of the International Shorebird Survey in Texas. They also led birding tours, spotting 17 shorebird species—including Piping, Snowy, and Semipalmated Plovers, Whimbrels, and an incredible gathering of thousands of American Avocets. Many thanks to Cin-Ty Lee (co-lead on one of the tours), Houston Audubon (stewards of Bolivar Flats Shorebird Sanctuary), and TOS for hosting such a powerful event.

Molly Jacobs, Ph.D., Manomet’s Vice President of Environmental Education and Outreach, recently presented at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) conference, sharing insights on Manomet and Wildlands Trust work with Brockton Kids Lead the Way. After her talk, she had the pleasure of meeting Nicole Mejia, a Brockton native and former participant in both the Green Team and Envirothon programs. Now a graduate student at Cornell, Nicole is conducting her own bird research. Molly invited her to visit the Trevor Lloyd-Evans Banding Lab this spring, and Nicole enthusiastically accepted. It’s yet another testament to the incredible impact of Manomet's partner Wildlands Trust in mentoring and inspiring the next generation of conservation leaders!

In Case You Missed It

In January's episode of The Small Sit webinar series, we unveiled the results of Manomet’s 51st Annual Christmas Bird Count. Hosted by the esteemed Trevor Lloyd-Evans, a prominent figure in the field of avian research, this webinar delves into the fascinating findings from this year's count, showcasing the incredible diversity and changes in bird populations across North America. Trevor brings a wealth of experience to the table, having dedicated nearly five decades to the mission of Manomet. WATCH NOW >>

Thank you to our recent corporate partners for helping Manomet deliver its mission of improving the health of flyways, coastal ecosystems, and working lands and seas.
