No City Support For Fire-Impacted Tenants

At the behest of the Pasadena Rental Housing Board, our City Council approved an eviction moratorium through the end of July for tenants impacted by the Eaton Fire. We support this compassionate but targeted approach to keeping residents housed.

However, we're concerned that there is no financial support for housing providers, who could be left without rent payments until August - or later, if the Council extends this program.

On Monday April 14th, the City Council will review a report from the Housing Department on this financial burden on tenants and landlords. The report identifies some non-profit organizations that may help, and expresses hope that faith-based institutions may also offer support. It also notes that the Housing Department has some Federal, State and County funds, but these are mostly already fully-subscribed and come with stringent limitations on eligibility.

The report does not identify any City funds to pay for the Council's decision to allow some tenants to stop paying rent until August.

Before Monday's meeting, click here to ask the City Council:

  • How can housing providers provide free rent until August (or later) with no support?
  • Why has the Council enacted this moratorium before considering any funding to help housing providers?
  • Why is this report coming from the Housing Department, instead of the Rent Stabilization Department that we are paying millions of dollars for?
  • What is the City's plan to help housing providers keep vulnerable tenants housed?

This Week in Pasadena

As well as Monday's Council meeting, there are some other important events in the coming week.

On the morning of Wednesday April 16th, the City Council will host Kathryn Barger, Chair of the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors. We will hear about coordinating work on the Eaton Fire recovery, as well as an update on planning for the 2028 Olympics here in Los Angeles and Pasadena.

Ms. Barger has been a supporter of housing providers across the County, and you can watch online from 8:30 AM on Wednesday.

The Pasadena Rental Housing Board will have its regular meeting on Thursday, April 17th at 6pm. Although they have not yet published their agenda, we expect it will include further analysis of their multimillion dollar funding gap. You can take part online, by correspondence, or by attending. Details for taking part (and eventually their agenda) will be on their web page.
