Critchlow Adkins Children's Centers' mission is to provide quality, financially accessible childcare for children and their families in a nurturing, diverse, safe, and enriching environment.
No Tricks... October Was A Treat At Critchlow Adkins! | Thanks to your generosity, our Critchlow Adkins Kids are having an awesome autumn! Our students spent the month soaking up all things fall, including trips to the pumpkin patch, spooky snacks, and costume parties! We hope you will take a moment to watch the video below to see some highlights of what YOU made possible in October!
Look At What We've Been Up To!
FairyFest Fun!
Our students were very excited to participate in Adkins Arboretum's FairyFest event. Each of our five sites designed and built a fairy house to be placed around the forest. Their whimsical and creative designs were incredibly impressive. We can just picture the fairies making themselves at home... Can't you?
| |
Emergency Preparedness!
If you need to know what to do in an emergency, head to our Easton School Age Site! Our students kicked off the month with a lesson on health and safety. The children talked about healthy eating habits, learned how to be prepared for emergent situations, practiced safely crossing the street, discussed the concept of "stranger danger," and were introduced to fire safety.
| |
Oodles of Noodles!
Our Cordova Site has built a beautiful community together. They share many special moments throughout the year, and October was no exception. This month, they hosted their annual spaghetti dinner. Our Cordova families had a blast, enjoying tons of delicious food, fun fall craft activities, and best of all, spending time with family, friends and neighbors!
| |
Pumpkin Power!
It was gourds galore for the little pumpkins at our Easton Preschool Site! They took an exciting trip to the pumpkin patch, where they enjoyed a ride, met animal friends, and picked pumpkins. Back in the classroom, they decorated pumpkins, explored the different parts of a pumpkin as they watched one being carved, and created a chemical reaction during a pumpkin volcano science experiment!
| |
Community Helpers!
Local first responders visited our White Marsh Site as our students learned about the different roles that helpers play in our community! The Trappe Volunteer Fire Department came to the site for a lesson on fire safety and an awesome fire truck tour. The preschoolers visited with two local EMTs and had an opportunity to explore an ambulance!
| |
Costumed Cuteness!
It was a monster mash at the St. Michaels Site's annual Costume Party and Covered Dish Dinner! Children and parents alike came dressed in the spirit of the spooky season to share delicious food, dance up a storm, play fun games, and enjoy time as a community. We love when our families make meaningful memories together!

Q: What was a huge success, thanks our incredible Critchlow Adkins supporters?
A: Our Annual Critchlow Adkins Trivia Night!
| |
We are still jumping for joy after our annual Trivia Night fundraiser on October 24th! This sold out evening was organized by our amazing event chairs Dru Haines, Linda Laramy, and Suzie Wheeler, along with their event committee and the assistance of our Development Director Liz Connelly.
Laughter, applause, and excitement filled the air as our attendees smashed through our $75,000 Fund-A-Need goal. When MC Ken Mann finally called the auction to a close, your generous contributions totaled $90,000! Thanks to you, the three new classrooms currently being built as part of our Cordova Site expansion will have brand new, beautiful furniture, engaging learning centers, and educational equipment and programming.
The laughter and excitement continued as we played a rousing game of trivia, hosted by John of Let's Do Trivia. At halftime, attendees played a bonus round called, "Are You Smarter Than A Critchlow Adkins Kid?" This round consisted of five questions asked and answered by students from each of our sites, along with depictions of the enrichment activities our children participated in to learn the answers.
There are no words to properly express our gratitude to everyone who participated in this fabulous annual tradition. Whether you attended, sponsored, planned, or helped carry out this amazing evening, we are so thankful to each and every one of you. YOU help Build Brighter Futures for our children, their families, and our community!

St. Michaels is Spook-tacular!
We want to take a moment to give special thanks to the 30+ businesses in St. Michaels who volunteered to participate in trick-or-treating for our St. Michaels Site. You are helping to create a magical community experience for our students, and we are beyond grateful!
Meet the DiFiglia-Buxton Family!
This month, we are excited to introduce you to a family you have positively impacted through your generous support of Critchlow Adkins. Stefanie DiFiglia and her husband Corey Buxton live in St. Michaels with their daughters Serafina (8) and Kaleigh (18 months), and their rescue chihuahuas, Beatrice and Mabel. Stefanie also has two adult sons from a previous marriage, and has one grandson with another on the way!
The DiFiglia-Buxtons love to share family adventures, including camping trips to Chincoteague and Assateague and exploring downtown St. Michaels. Stefanie and Serafina also enjoy baking gluten free muffins together.
| |
Stefanie is the Founder and a Nurse Practitioner at Two Tree Integrative Health, a local health care practice based on the principles of functional medicine. At Two Tree, Nurse Practitioners and health coaches work together - along with a nutritionist when needed - to take a holistic approach to their patients' healthcare.
Stefanie and Corey's daughter Serafina attends our St. Michaels Site, which is located within St. Michaels Elementary School. She has so much fun that Stefanie is "not allowed" to pick her up before 4:15 so she can spend as much time with her Critchlow Adkins friends as possible.
When asked about the family's experience with Critchlow Adkins, Stefanie shares: "I am grateful for the opportunity that Critchlow provides for Serafina. The hours work for me. The cost fits our budget. The teachers are wonderful. I find the site director Marlene to be easy to reach, accommodating, and knowledgeable."
She also had a special message for you, our wonderful supporters:
"I have nothing but positive things to say. You are supporting an excellent program that is producing a very happy kid at the end of a very long day. I don't know what more I could ask for."
Thank you, Stefanie and Corey, for entrusting Serafina's care to us. We love having you as part of our Critchlow Adkins family!

An October STEAM Project YOU Can Do At Home!
Are you spooked by the idea of finding fun and engaging STEAM projects for your child that aren't horribly complicated? No need to fear! We've got two very simple Halloween-themed STEAM activities that you can try at home, inspired by the book, Creepy Crayon, by Aaron Reynolds.
|
First, read the story together, or watch the read-along video provided here. Creepy Crayon follows a young rabbit named Jasper, who finds a purple crayon that has magical powers and helps him with his schoolwork and art. As the book goes on, Jasper finds the crayon to be more demanding of his time and attention, and feels guilty taking credit for work he did not really do himself.
Jasper tries to get rid of the crayon, but is unsuccessful, and must find a way to finally get the creepy crayon out of his life.
After reading the book, pose these two challenges to your child.
Challenge #1: Provide your child with paper, tape, and scissors. Ask him/her to build a container that will not only hold all of his/her crayons, but keep them locked in so none of them can escape. The container can be any shape or size.
Challenge # 2: Provide your child with white paper and a white crayon. Then ask him/her to write a secret message to a family member or friend. The family member or friend can then paint the paper with watercolor paints to reveal the secret message!
| |
As always, get as creative as you want, and have lots of fun learning together! Follow our Facebook and Instagram pages to see a new STEAM project every week on "STEAM Saturday!"
| |
We think you are absolutely
Fa-"BOO"-lous!
