FALL PROGRAMMING IS HERE!

Dear Friends of Charting Careers,

We are thrilled to have all of our programs back in full gear for the new school year and here are a few highlights:

  • Our elementary and middle school scholars are participating twice a week in our collaborative after-school program with the Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (read more below). They are seining, cooking, and building relationships!
  • Laticia Hicks, our Mentor Coordinator, is leading our weekly Panther Hour programming at Annapolis High School. College visits, networking events, and career planning - here we come!
  • Ralinda Wimbush, our Beyond High School Coordinator, is conducting regular check-ins with our 11 college students. It is such a joy to see these scholars thriving in college. One scholar is tutoring his peers at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, another is playing basketball at Elmira College, and others are working hard in their classes at Anne Arundel Community College.
  • Our Family Partnership Team and Community Navigation Specialists have been hard at work partnering with families and helping them reach their goals. For example, this past week our team assisted one family with accessing food and connecting with Arundel Lodge mental health services.
  • We are grateful for the new and returning mentors and tutors who make our mission possible.

Thank you for all that you do to support our mission and for investing in our scholars and their families!

With best wishes,

Erin Snell, PhD

UPDATED MISSION STATEMENT

While our purpose is the same as when we were founded in 2018, we recently devoted time as a board, using input from numerous stakeholders, to refine our mission statement language. We are excited to share our updated Charting Careers mission with you:

Inspiring youth to discover their power and reach their goals through transformative mentoring, life-enriching opportunities, and family partnership and by serving as champions for equity.

NAVIGATING TIDES AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM

Navigating TIDES (the collaborative, after-school program by Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park and Charting Careers) is back in session, now with a name! In their first weeks back, young scholars played outside, worked with their tutors, completed a scavenger hunt in the woods, enjoyed being near the water, had a blast on a field trip to Chesapeake Children's Museum, and discussed what they are looking for in a mentor. Scholars said a mentor is someone who is "nice, patient, calm, honest, gives you time, helps, sets the bar at a higher standard, jokes around, and pushes me to do something that is good.”

MENTORING

Mentor Training & Orientation

Thank you to all of the incredible people (both new and returning) who have answered the call to mentorship and decided to offer their talent and experience to help support the young scholars in our organization. Our October 2022 Mentor Training and Orientation was an inspiring and hope-filled evening. A special thank you to Eastport United Methodist Church for sharing your space with us!

Congratulations, Laticia!

Congratulations Mentor Coordinator Laticia Hicks for being selected as a Fannie Lou Hamer Award recipient by the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Anne Arundel County! Read more here.
