Navigating the healthcare system can be complex for anyone. For adults with developmental disabilities, it can be overwhelming, especially when there is no one to help explain appointments, medications, or medical decisions.

That was the reality for Tony, a longtime client of The Arc San Francisco.

After his mother passed away, Tony was left alone and struggling. His eczema went untreated, causing painful sores. His health declined, and he became increasingly isolated.

A Health Advocate stepped in to help him navigate urgent medical care and find the support he needed.

With support from The Arc SF, Tony was able to restart his medical treatment. His Health Advocate worked alongside providers to make sure his needs were understood and advocated for him to move into a supportive Family Home where he could receive consistent care.

With steady support and a reliable routine, Tony’s health began to improve.

His skin healed with regular treatment, and he started reconnecting with his community. Today, he greets people warmly, spends time with others, and has even traveled with his Family Home to Hawaii, San Diego, and Santa Cruz.

Tony’s story is not unique.

Right now, there are adults with developmental disabilities waiting for the same kind of support Tony received. Many are navigating complex health needs without consistent guidance.

Health Advocates help change that.

They make sure care is person-centered. They help people understand their options, attend appointments, and communicate with providers. They build trust and continuity in a system that can otherwise feel confusing and overwhelming.

They also help shift how care is delivered. By working directly with medical professionals, Health Advocates support more thoughtful, respectful interactions with adults with developmental disabilities.

This is what health advocacy makes possible.

Not just better outcomes, but a healthcare experience where people are seen, heard, and supported.
