Yamato—The Drummers of Japan

March 4

Yamato, the Drummers of Japan, returns to The Soraya on Saturday, March 4 with a thrilling, high-energy, and explosive interpretation of the centuries-old Taiko tradition. Hinotori: The Wings of Phoenix is a new production created to celebrate the company’s historic 30th anniversary. The title of the group’s latest show references the mythical sunbird that represents fire, justice, obedience, fidelity, and the southern star constellations in Japanese culture. “Hinotori” translates to “good bird” in Japanese.  More>>

How I Learned to Drive

Paula Vogel's play focuses on Li’l Bit's progress between the ages of 11 and 18. Her intellectual and physical development are both accelerated and she is on her way to becoming a young woman of considerable potential. Lacking a father at home, her uncle Peck steps in to counsel her and teach her things, like how to drive (hence the title). They are both in their way somewhat troubled individuals, and they find some comfort in each other’s company.

Out of The Darkness and Into The Light

It opens with the glorious voice of Elizabeth Frohlich busking in the subway, just before Montes takes his fateful leap. The show plays like a courtroom drama, with the audience as the jury and a bingo drum full of moments from Montes’s life adding the improvisational aspect. Each withdrawal from the tumbled drum a question to be answered or a story to be told…Whether the audience will judge him worthy of another chance at life is all a gamble. It’s a brilliant concept and Montes is a gifted storyteller. More>>
